Optical properties of different shaped metallic nanoparticles
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryThis project is related to nanotechnology and we will study the Absorption, Scattering, and Extinction properties of different nanoparticles coated with gold and silver. The simulated results are intended to show that by changing the proposed parameters for these nanoparticles different LSPR (Localized surface plasmon resonance) peaks are activated in the spectra. The LSPR modes are dipole, quadrupole, and octupole along with redshift. This study reveals that LSPR is strongly dependent on size. Moreover, the Extinction properties of gold-coated nanoparticles and silver-coated nanoparticles are compared. These observations and results may lead to new opportunities and applications in the field of bioimaging, biomedical and photovoltaics.
Project Objectives- To study the absorption, scattering, and extinction of spherical, conical and cylindrical shape nanoparticles coated with gold and silver.
- To change radius for spherical and height for conical and cylindrical shaped nanoparticles coated with gold and silver separately and observe the above properties.
- To study localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) modes and shifts in modes.
- We will study three different shape nanoparticles(spherical, conical and cylindrical) coated with gold and silver.
- The spherical nanoparticle has only one parameter which is radius ‘r’.while two parameters i.e. radius and height for conical and cylindrical shape nanoparticles.
- COMSOL multi-physics software is used for simulation and the finite element method(FEM) technique is used for the calculation of nanoparticle spectra.
Nanotechnology is the branch of science and engineering refers to the materials having the size of 100nm or less. In recent years nanotechnology brings a storm in the world because of its applications in almost every field. Different structures such as gold, silver copper and aluminum with spherical or more complex shapes producing amazing properties and results which can be utilized in different applications such as biosensing, bioimaging photovoltaics, data storage. It also offers potential in medicine, efficient power sources, breast cancer, life-saving treatments and spectroscopy etc
Technical Details of Final DeliverableWe have investigated the scattering, absorption and extinction properties of three different shaped nanoparticles i-e spherical, conical and cylindrical by taking polarization along the x-axis. We conclude that LSPR modes strongly depend upon the size which we change. The gold coated nanoparticle shows a dipolar mode except for conical shaped nanoparticle while silver-coated nanoparticle exhibits quadrupole and octupole mode.
