A multipurpose CNC machine is designed to drill holes, cut, draw and engrave wood, metal or an acrylic board. It can be used to make a design on a board or to draw the layout of a printed circuit board. The layout of the circuit or the design to be engraved is drawn by means of an application software installed in the computer. A microcontroller board is connected to the serial/USB port of the computer. The microcontroller receives the information about the coordinates of the movement and type of the drill bits from the computer program. The system then controls the stepper motors to achieve the required movement according to the design/layout. The motors can move in three dimensions (X, Y, Z) and create the design on the board.
Project Objectives- To design a CNC machine that can be used for Cutting, drilling holes, drawing and engraving wood, metal or an acrylic board
- To capture a design/layout through a computer.
- To design PCBs for small projects
- To have enhanced level of precision and accuracy in designing and layout of circuits
The system consists of a computer, a microcontroller board and the motors attached to the drilling and milling machine. An application software is installed in the computer for drawing the design or layout of the circuit. The Arduino microcontroller board is attached with the computer via USB port. The microcontroller board receives instructions from the software, decodes them and exercises a controlled movement of the machine tools. The motor drivers control the movement of the machine tools in three dimensions (X, Y and Z axis). The spindle drill connected with the motor drivers controls its angular motion. High precision and accuracy is achieved in the design through microcontroller.
