Project Summary

In Pakistan future Electrical Energy System will be based on the concept of Smart Grid. Smart grid is complex system and its analysis through numerical models is needed to recommend smart solutions. In this project for the analysis of the Smart Grid, we model Smart Grid system in Matlab/Simulink. Our main focus will be to model the integration of Solar and Wind Energy conversion system. Simulink has integral feature that any model developed can be converted to low level languages such as System C, VHDL and therefore the model can be tested in hardware setup such as FPGA/DSP. Therefore, in the Second step, our goal will be load the optimized version of the developed model in embedded system.

Project Objectives

  1. Understanding theSmart Grid system
  2. Understanding Solar/Wind energy conversion system
  3. Numerical Modeling Solar/Wind conversion system.
  4. Implementation the Numerical Model in Simulink/Matlab.

      5.       Generation oflevel Language(VHDL, SYSTEM C, VERICOG)for FPGA/DSP.

Project Implementation Method

  1. The plan contains an overview of the system, a brief description of the major tasks involved in the implementation
    1. Existing Numerical Models of Different parts of Smart Grid will be studied.
    2. Numerical model of the Wind/Solar Energy Conversion System will be studied from the existing literature
    3. Best Numerical Model will be implemented in the Simulink
    4. The system will be analyzed to recommend good solutions in the form of Publications
    5. Low level codes will be generated using integral features of the Simulink
    6. FPGA/DSP/ or any suitable programmable embedded system will be programed for the Wind/Solar Conversion system
    7. The Embedded system will be analyzed through Simulink.

Understanding Smart Grid Technology

The smart grid uses computer technology to improve the communication, automation, and connectivity of the various components of the power network. This allows -- as an example -- for bulk transmission of power gathered from multiple generation plants.

                  In the computer application of modeling and simulation a computer is used to build a mathematical form which contains key parameters of the physical model. The mathematical model represents the physical model in virtual form, and conditions are applied that set up the experiment of interest. The simulation starts – i.e., the computer calculates the results of those conditions on the mathematical model – and outputs results in a format that is either machine- or human-readable, depending upon the implementation  implemantation the model in simulink.
