Project Summary

  • A Creep Testing Machine is one that accurately measures the creep of a material under constant load and at elevated temperatures until the final rupture. Basically, it demonstrates the effect of Temperature on Creep. Creep is defined as the time-dependent deformation of a material under constant load at constant elevated temperature. The resulting strain is a function of applied stress, temperature and time. Creep is increasingly important in industry in many different applications ranging from turbine rotors, high-pressure steam tubes, suspended cables, tightened bolts where materials are subjected to extremely high temperatures and stresses which may cause them to change size, shape and lead to rupture.
  • So the main objective of a creep test is to measure how a given material will perform under constant loads and elevated temperatures to make sure they are ready for use in the industry under such conditions. In a creep test, a tensile specimen is subjected to a constant load inside a furnace set to a specified temperature maintained at a constant high temperature.
  • Our design of a testing machine for Creep at high temperature. This new and optimized design, covering all aspects of the machine, from a completely new furnace and controller with a screen to a new look, the electronic control module or increased energy efficiency. All this will lead our machine a big step beyond, placing it as one of the most advanced Creep machines in the world.

Our project involves the design and fabrication of a machine in order to perform the creep test of various materials being used in high-temperature applications. The maximum applied load on the specimen can be 10kN and
tests could be carried out at a maximum temperature of 1200°C. The machine uses a lever loading mechanism for load
application and measures extension up to 55% of the gauge length of the specimen. All components will be designed and
stress analysis will be performed. Components will be fabricated separately and then assembled. The machine will be able to
successfully perform tensile creep tests for different materials at various temperatures according to ASTM standard
E-139-06 According to Standards: ISO 204.

The drive for the more efficient use of fuels in applications such as power generation plant and gas turbines demands that components are designed for higher and higher operating temperatures, requiring new creep resistant alloys to be developed. To investigate these alloys and to produce the design data the creep test is used.

Project Objectives

  • To fully design a Creep Testing Machine within a hard budget in the given time frame – by the end of the 8th semester.
  • The reason behind the project is to provide Mehran University of Engineering and Technology with its first working Creep Machine. It will provide an opportunity for materials to be tested for Creep under extremely high temperatures for research or educational purposes after the project is completed. The very high temperatures will allow for testing stronger more complex materials such as alloys with higher melting points.
  • A fully detailed, clear and FEA tested 3D CAD drawing will be produced, effectively demonstrating the complete final design of the Creep Testing Machine in all of its dimensions and absolute properties.

Project Implementation Method

First of all, we have designed the Creep testing machine in two simulation software SolidWorks and Abaqus FEA and checked it and obtained reasonable results on different materials and plots.

 Now it’s time to fabricate this machine physically, therefore, we need the budget then we will go for this.

After that, we will visit markets for purchasing of the different components of our project in order to assemble them and give our project the desired shape according to its requirements.

  • The machine enables us to determine the efficiency of the stability and behavior of the material at ordinary stress.
  • This machine also develops a creep-time dependant curve from that the material is investigated or changed accordingly.
  • This can also be used in aerospace or aircraft industries in order to generate the properties used in its component so this chance of risks could be reduced.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

  • The machine will be designed to be cheap, practical, robust, reliable, easy to use, relatively lightweight, safe (to the touch), long-lasting and professional-looking.
  • The project meets the academic requirements of our qualification as it will require a great deal of knowledge We have obtained from papers such as material science, manufacturing technology, CAD/SolidWorks engineering design, quantitative techniques, thermodynamics, solid mechanics and heat transfer papers.

The purpose of this work is to design and fabrication of
creep testing machine to evaluate tensile creep behaviors
of engineering materials at high temperatures.
Components of the creep testing machine will be designed
in Solid Works and configuration design will be made
which includes the location of each part with respect to others.
Material selection based on practical conditions will be done.
Stress analysis of critical components will be performed by
using Solid works simulation to evaluate material behavior
under various conditions. After designing, creep testing machine
will be fabricated and tensile creep tests will be
conducted on different materials under various applied loads and conditions.
