Project Summary

Hybrid energy system has been the focus of many researchers, however less focus has been given to ENLIL which is a new energy souce . The ENLIL is a first vertical axis wind turbine and solar panel that transforms highways into renewable energy sources by using the dynamics of the city. ENLIL  generates energy by using the winds created by the vehicles as well as the natural winds. This turbine uses the wind pressure generated by the fast moving vehicles on roads such as big trucks and busses that helps to rotate its blade.As an addition to commonly known turbines ENLIL is designed to capture the fast and continuous flow of all traffic on the roads. It is designed with vertical long blades such that it will use the utmost quantity of wind energy. ENLIL turbine covers the lesser space on the ground and is simple to handle and can easily be assembled and disassembled which makes it more durable. Solar Panel is also fixed at the top of the turbine to generate electricity. The design of an axial flow permanent magnet synchronous generator which converts the mechanical energy from the blades to electrical output, we propose to develop a system that it is the combination of wind and solar so we consider it as a hybrid system.

Project Objectives

The proposed method is to design and develop a hybrid renewable energy system comprising of a vertical axis turbine and solar panels for electric energy generation and to utilize the wind energy provided by speeding vehicles for running the turbines day and night. The main objective is to generate electricity in hybrid renewable energy resources by turbine so, it can produce the electricity in any wind blowing areas. Most of the electricity demands of countries like Pakistan, Afghanistan comes from renewable energy resources over a long time. Indian government allows the offshore wing plants recently for power generation as the energy demands are increasing drastically. With this example people can realize how far our country need to go to match the developed nations. This method utilizes both wind and solar energy system for power generation.

Project Implementation Method

We will use hybrid system which consist solar panel and wind generation system. In this proposed solution we can install this turbine anywhere as the size is small and also the generator which requires only minimum torque during starting. This turbine can be kept at any places like seashores, buildings and normally in wind vicinity areas. The proposed hybrid system is fixed on roads by utilizing the wind produced by the moving vehicles and also utilizing energy from the sun using solar panel.

Benefits of the Project

The benefit of the project has the following key benefits.

  • A hybrid system which is combination of solar and wind that generates power from passing traffic and also from solar energy is the latest clean energy.
  • The vertical devices, known as turbine, are able to harness air  created by moving vehicles to produce energy, along with  solar power at the same time.
  • Contribute as a usefull source for electrical energy shortfall.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

In this project we will harness the wind energy produced by moving vehicles on a road and extracting the solar potential with a solar panel as a dual energy source. This is achieved by designing a Savonius wind turbine and placing a mono-crystalline solar panel together.

When the solar panel is operational, the voltages are sent to the MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking). This MPPT is connected to a reference battery which is charged by the wind as well as solar system. The MPPT stabilizes the voltages from the solar panel and vertical wind turbine.

When the wind turbine extracts the wasted wind potential from nearby vehicles, power is generated by the PMDC generator. The voltages from the PMDC generator are provided to the Buck/Boost converter which are either bucked or boosted depending on the situation. This DC power will then charge the battery.
