Maximum Power Point System also known as MPPT is an algorithm implemented on a Solar Power generation system. Its aim is to maximize the power output by tracking that point on the I-V curve of a solar panel that corresponds to the maximum generated output. The output from conventional charge controllers is approximately 65-70 % of the ideal power generated, through this system that percentage goes up to 80-85 % by ultimately reducing cost and space consumption by an exponential level.
The project uses a system of DC-DC converters to iterate through the I-V curve of a solar panel to find the point which corresponds to the maximum power generated. These iterations are controlled by a robust algorithm which implies artificial intelligence to determine the power level at different stages/points of said I-V curve. The point knows as MPP may change due to a number of factors i.e. irradiance, temperature etc. taking in view of these factors, the algorithm will keep on running to ensure that the power remains focused on the MPP, irrespective of the outside affecting factors.
The final hardware of the project would include a series of DC-DC Converters, a solar panel, a battery and load and an output screen which shows the power being generated. The algorithm would be running on the DC-DC converters and the MPP would be tracked by said algorithm, after the MPP has been tracked the next DC-DC converter will convert the voltage to the optimum value of the battery and will start charging it. The load will be supported by the battery being charged by the MPPT system.
