IOT Based Prepaid Energy Meter
Project Area of Specialization Internet of ThingsProject Summary In the present era, most of the developed countries are moving towards the implementation of prepaid energy metering system. As there are different issues in the conventional billing system. The error can be in the electromechanical meters or it can be a human error while taking the reading. Smart meters are a solution to the financial loses as well as electricity loses faced by a country nowadays. The prepaid energy meters will make the consumer enable to manage its electricity consumption effectively. The issue for the developing countries is that the prepaid meters are infeasible because of their high cost. In this project a design of prepaid energy meter is proposed to overcome the problem faced by the country. This meter is based on a GSM module interacted with Arduino which will work based on prepayment of the units which will be consumed by the user. Arduino will enable or disable the connection of electricity based on the balance in the user’s account. The consumer will be informed about the low balance in the account and to recharge account to use electricity. Moreover, it will provide a web portal to the user to manage the electricity usage effectively. Project Objectives- To measure the electricity consumed.
- Deduct the amount from credit as per electricity consumption.
- Enable and disable electricity connection based on the remaining balance in the account.
- Provide user friendly interface for consumers and service providers through IOT.
First, we’ll be working on current and voltage sensing and their calibration then we will be measuring the amount of power used in KWh or units using Arduino. Then we will interface GSM/GPRS module with the Arduino and implement the Prepaid energy meter. After this we’ll implement IOT so that service providers can track their consumer usage through user friendly interface. We’ll build 2 energy meters to demonstrate a step toward Smart Grid.
Benefits of the Project- Direct
- Make every customer a self-interested guardian of the power supply
- Real time bill monitoring through a user-friendly interface
- Upfront payment for electricity
- Indirect
- It reduces wastage of energy
- No billing hassles
- Allow customers to budget expenses
- A good step toward concept of smart grid
The final deliverables will consist of 2 prepaid single-phase energy meters which will be sending data to a station from which service providers can track their energy usage and other factors. Each energy meter will be made up of some central processing unit, current sensing circuitry, voltage sensing circuitry, and a GSM/GPRS module.
