IOT Based Fuel Pump Security and Monitoring System
The market demand for effective fuel management and to control and monitor fuel provided to the vehicles is on the rise. Theft at owner side by meter tempering is an rising issue which can cause significant financial losses to the fuel pump owners as well as the customers. This can lead to the loss of trust in the company and make it a primary target for media and people. More careful monitoring of fueling and method to control the whole system remotely has hugh benefits for both the provider and the user. Our FYP will involve the complete monitoring and security of the petrol pump to avoid any hazard like fire etc. and fuel theft in any case and to keep the owner updated around the clock.
The implementation will take place in 4 stages. We will work on the water flow sensors and tank level sensors in the first stage. Later in the second stage we will work on the working of different sensors like gas and flame sensors. In the third stage we will be integrating face recognition cameras into the system making it a complete automated and security system. In the last stage we will work on communication systems. We will divide the communication into 2 parts. The first part is works using internet. We will be using Nodemcu for this purpose. It will deliver us all the real time values of fuel tank and total fuel dispensed around the clock. Similarly showing us the feed from camera module. The 2nd part contains the GSM based communication. It basically targets the emergency services and the owner but is triggered only if certain conditions are met like fire outbreak etc.
This project may contain hardware as well as software parts integrated and working together. The brain of the project will be a microcontroller which will receive and monitor all the values of sensor attached. The hardware system will control the flow of fuel while the software will be used to provide authorization for fuel flow. We will be using flame and gas sensors for fire and leakage monitoring which are in turn connected to the water showers and alarm system. The system will also have the function to send alerts to the rescue department and firefighting department in case of fire outbreak.
The system will be continuously monitored by the owner remotely and no fuel will be dispensed without his approval. Apart from that the system will use integrated cameras to identify and record the movement of everyone in the station. So, if fuel is stolen by any person, he can be easily identified by the owners.
On the customer end a pre installed meter in car (may be portable) is used to ensure that he receives the exact amount of fuel that he pays for.
Following are the main objectives of the project:
• To keep monitoring the main tank levels and fuel dispensed to avoid theft.
• To keep the owner updated in case of theft, fire, and leakage.
• To alert the emergency services in case of fire. • To alert the complete fuel pump using alarm system.
• To halt the fuel flow system in case of emergency.
• To use smart camera system to monitor the fuel pump and employee identification.
• A portable or pre installed system is provided to the customer to ensure he gets the exact amount of fuel he paid for..
• The customer can easily compare values of his fuel meter and the meter present on the dispenser machine..

On the user end we use an embedded system with a flow sensor and lcd display that gives real time values for complete customer satisfaction.
The results we want to achieve are the complete and fool proof monitoring of the fuel pump. This project can be easily commercialized and can be mass produced at cheap rates. The working of AI based systems as well as human control can lead to well protected fuel pump without any loss of jobs for the employees. This system ensures that the owner gets maximum profit from his fuel station and has control over systems remotely.
In an underdeveloped country like Pakistan we still depend on traditional methods to measure and dispense fuel. The owner must check the left fuel in the main tank by using a “dip rod”, a rod having different values engraved in it. The owner then compares the values from the dip rod with the “dip chart”, a chart which shows fuel left inside the main tank. Now for this system to work few conditions must be met one of which includes that the owner must always be present at time of measurement and one other that the reading should be correct up to last point or the owner loses his fuel.
Our system aims to change this traditional method and bring automation to the system without causing loss of jobs. The owner can view the stats of his fuel station remotely and can stop the flow of fuel is he wants to. For a country like Pakistan we can translate it into a startup easily. The point that the owner can remotely monitor and control this system is of great benefit specially to businesspeople.
Majority of the clients tend to be the fuel station owners who own 2 or more stations or cannot be present at the station every day. We recently visited a fuel pump and discussed our idea with the owner. He was more than interested but would not like to believe that this could be possible. The idea of controlling a whole fuel station is more than enough for people to buy our product. Of course, if we get a chance as a startup we will focus on marketing and target small fuel stations rather than big one to catch their attention and create competition in the market.
On the customer end we ensure that he receives the exact amount of fuel that he pays for. Our system measure the fuel at 2 points, One before leaving the dispensre machine and other when entering the customers car. Both of these va,ues are shown on screens and can be easily compared.
For investors we can improve this project more by using more accurate and sophisticated equipment’s. And if a company were to develop and mass produce this system it could bring a revolution in our country. Even a small city or town has at least 3-5 fuel station.
