Project Summary

The assembled kilowatt-hour meter by electrical energy providers will only show the electrical consumption in terms of kWh rather than showing the cost of energy that we have spent. In order to check the unit's consumption, the consumer has to go to check the meter physically but if the device display the consumed units and pricing information on the mobile application then it might function accordingly. Keeping these requirements in mind we propose a project to show the electrical consumption pricing in real-time. The project focuses on the design and creation of a device with a mobile application for the electricity consumer. This device will make it very easier for a customer to monitor home/office appliances Watts(W), Ampere(A), Voltage(V), units consumed (KWh), the running duration & Bill Amount (Cost) in real-time. The design will involve communication between a PIC microcontroller and the mobile application. It is a device that can be accessed anywhere by using a mobile application as compared to other smart meters. These devices will be implemented at single phase supply areas like homes, offices, shops and submeters. Real-time pricing will give a real cost-controlling opportunity to consumers and to plan and manage their electrical consumption effectively.

Project Objectives

The main objectives of this lab are:

  • To design and creation of device as well as mobile application for the electricity consumers
  • Acquisition of real-time data from sensors that can be used by mobile app (voltage & current)
  • To design a mobile app that can record the real-time data of the user
  • To design a hardware that can fetch the data from the user end
  • To design a mobile app that can generate expected electricity bill on the basis of unit consumption
  • To design a mobile app that provides 24/7 online monitoring of the data

Project Implementation Method

  • This project is based on hardware integrated with designing of device along with a mobile application
  • Initially data is being fetched from the appliances
  • This data will then sensed by sensors
  • The project will use real-time data acquisition from sensors (voltage & current) that will be fed to the PIC microcontroller, then the microcontroller will send the data to the Wi-Fi module
  • The microcontroller will be programmed according to the requirements
  • The data will be fed to the cloud and output will be displayed on mobile app
  • Besides developing a hardware, there is also required to writes a programming code for the power(W), Units consumed (KWh), and their price and display of the results in real-time on the mobile app

Studies shows that users prefer mobile apps more that mobile websites that’s why this idea introduces mobile app for electrical data metering.

  • Providing real time data useful for balancing electrical load (Load Management) and reducing power outages
  • This mobile app also stores the data and user friendly
  • Real-time pricing will give a real cost-controlling opportunity to consumers and to plan and manage their electrical consumption effectively
  • It is a device that can be accessed anywhere by using a mobile app
