Project Summary

The project pertains to the development of IoT based pollution detection system. Air pollution sensors along with GPS & GSM modules will be used to collect real-time air particles, along with the location and timestamp. The data is then will be sent to the cloud database for storage after processing and normalization in Raspberry pi. The data stored in the cloud will be pre-processed and trained through different Machine Learning algorithms to predict future pollution levels at different geographical locations. The analysis of real-time and already collected data will be shown graphically on the web portal for admin, in the admin dashboard. The general users will have web and mobile applications that they will use to detect the pollution level on their current location and generate alerts according to the detected Air Quality Index - AQI. The system will suggest relevant precautionary and safety measures to prevent health damage caused by air pollution. Moreover, details of skin and respiratory diseases that can be caused by air pollution will also be provided via these user's applications.

Project Objectives

  1. Real-time air pollution analysis by admin, using the admin dashboard.
  2. Real-time pollution detection by general users. 
  3. Prediction of future AQI level in the geographical location.
  4. Suggesting relevant precautionary and safety measures to prevent health damage caused by air pollution.

Project Implementation Method

Our proposed implementation methodology of the project will be as follows:


There will be a total of four hardware modules, consisting of an air pollution sensor, raspberry pi, GPS, and GSM hardware to collect the air particles in real-time. One assembled module (a combination of the above hardware) will be in a static position, and another one will be carried by a drone to collect the air particles from different geographical locations. The collected sensor data will be preprocessed and converted to the Air Quality Index (AQI) in raspberry pi. This will be then logged to the cloud IoT platform in real-time with a timestamp and device coordinates. Once the sensor's data starts logging into the cloud database, there will be a web portal for the admin to display these logged data in the form of real-time and heatmap graphs for analysis.


Once a significant amount of data is collected, the dataset will be trained through different Machine Learning models to predict the future AQI level in a certain location.


Moreover, this project will be available on different platforms includes the web, iOS, and android for general users to detect the AQI level of their current location and get health-related precautionary measures alerts suggested by WHO (World Health Organization).

Benefits of the Project

  1. People will have the leverage to detect air quality - AQI in no time and take health-related safety measures accordingly.
  2. Also, it will help people to get a prediction for future air pollution at a certain location.
  3. The data stored in the cloud will also be available for analysis, to help improve air quality in a certain location.
  4. The provincial and federal governments can use these apps to attract foreign tourists. As it will help the foreign tourist to monitor the air pollution in their desired location they plan to tour. 

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

We are going to develop hardware instance with Raspberry pi (including air particle sensor (SDS011), GPS sensor (Neo6m), GSM module (SIM800L)) with a portable power battery or a power supply, that'll be placed at a certain fixed area and, one is moveable, using a drone. These hardware instances will collect data and send it to the connected cloud database. The already stored and, real-time data will be fetched through API calls and will be displayed on the web portal for admin, in the admin dashboard for analysis. The general users can detect air pollution in real-time through their web, and mobile devices (iOS and Android).
