Intelligent Waste Management System
The present waste management systems include manual segregation of the waste that is more time-consuming and inefficient. Moreover, in the case of smart bins, optimized collection routes are required which may delay the collection process and often consumes more resources.
The project aims to develop a plant-level hybrid system that efficiently segregates the waste into different compartments using deep learning and sensor and also monitors the waste level inside each compartment. Such efficient segregation will help in recycling and reduce the amount of waste reaching landfills.
The project objectives are :
1- Design and implementation of an autonomous prototype for a waste segregation system.
2- Development of metal segregation system using physical sensors.
3- Design and development of plastic and paper segregation using deep neural networks.
The waste will move on the conveyer belt. The servo motors are attached on one side of the conveyer belt and waste compartments are attached on the opposite side. Metallic waste will be detected through the sensor and for plastic and paper, the camera will monitor real-time and data will be sent to raspberry pi to identify the waste using deep learning. Respective servo motors will move the waste product into its compartment and once any of the waste compartments gets full, the converter belt will stop.
The project aims to provide the following benefits:
1- To eliminate the hectic collection process and minimize the consumption of resources.
2-Help in recycling and other waste disposal methods by efficiently segregating the waste well beforehand thus saving time.
3-To minimize the risk of health hazards to human beings and create a better environment.
The technical details of the project include the following :
1- Camera for real-time processing.
2- Raspberry pi as the main control unit for the system.
3-Inductive proximity sensor to detect metal.
4-Servo motors to move the waste product from the conveyer belt.
5-A DC motor with gear mechanism to control the speed and rotation of the conveyer belt.
6-Ultrasonic sensors to monitor the waste level inside the compartments.
