This raises a concern to many developed and developing countries with the efficient utilization of electricity. There is a need for consumers or people to keep track their daily power usage in houses offices & industries, whenever they want..

This project focuses on Intelligent energy metering of the consumer data along with the load monitoring smartly and deliver this information to the utility company. The proposed intelligent meter is equipped with the latest technology to cover the defects of the conventional metering system.  This intelligent energy meter measures, monitors and controls the energy consumption of the consumers and transmits the energy consumption wirelessly to the utility companies using GSM.  With this intelligent energy meter, load management, manipulation of meters, logging, and billing of SD cards are also been implemented.

Project Objectives

  • The objective is to efficiently measure energy consumed units.
  • The indications of tempering or electricity theft.
  • Communication medium (wireless) will be setup between consumer and utility companies.
  •  Load management as per sanction load up-to some kW on their premises.
  • Load utilization in Peak hours setup to some limit .
  • When consumer load exceeds the maximum demand during peak hours, meter sheds the load and alert message will sent.
  • The consumption values stored in the SD Card. Different parameters like Voltage, Current, Power, Energy and Billing values are being stored including date and time for various analysis.

Project Implementation Method

The implementation of the Intelligent Energy Meter having demand side load monitoring with the enabling feature of Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) and storing data in SD card, communication mechanism of billing information with the consumer and utility through GSM network. The intelligent meters enable the development of a system that helps the energy utilization efficiently hence the energy cost be reduced.  

 The project work focuses  on  Metering data  for distributing the electricity smartly and efficiently to the consumers. The main drawback of previously used traditional meters is that they do not provide instantaneous information to the consumers, which is accomplished with this project. This Intelligent Meter helps consumer to know the information of consumption of electricity for appliances in their respective houses.

The Project Implementation will be achieved in  following phases

  1. Literature Review
  2. Components / Equipments / Tools gathering
  3. Software based simulation testing
  4. Hardware based testing on Breadboard
  5. PCB Designing & Fabrication
  6. Components soldering
  7. Integration on Energy meter
  8. Measurement of single-phase energy by the meter.
  9. Testing and validation.
  10. Payment mechanism for prepaid energy credit through the GSM module.
  11. Automatically crediting consumers and accounting for consumption as power is being used.
  12. Sending alerts when credit is running low, disconnection of an electrical power user on reaching zero credit balance;
