Integration of motion sensor coil gun and high voltage fence for the development of hybrid security system
Project Area of Specialization RoboticsProject SummaryWith the advancement in technology, automatic systems are getting more popular among people. Similarly, security systems with automatically targeting the enemy are getting more popular among people. Our focus is to develop an automated hybrid system by integrating a motion sensor, coil gun and an electric fence that can detect and shoot the target automatically.
This project is extension of previous development. The developed system consists of a high voltage non-lethal electric fence and a coil gun to interrupt unauthorized intrusions in a restricted area. The high voltage fence is being operated by a fly-back transformer that generates pulses of 30 kV at repetitive rate of 2000 pulses / sec with pulse energy of 0.1 J making it very nasty while keeping it non-lethal.
The coil gun accelerates a mild steel projectile (mass: 11-gram, length: 30mm, diameter: 8mm) up to velocity of 105 m/sec. This project is focused on improving the projectile speed by decreasing the damping ratio, increasing pulse current, reducing pulse duration and pulse shaping through design on capacitive supply and inclusion of secondary coil to extract unwanted energy from the coil. A 540 uF capacitive supply provides 2000V for peak pulse current of 1400A for pulse duration of 0.6m sec. The capacitive supply is charged by 110v AC using Cockcroft Walton multiplier circuit that was modified to suit the target application.
Moreover, a motion sensor, Ultrasonic Sensor and a 2DOF tracking platform are added to make it an automated system.
Project ObjectivesThe objectives of this project includes:
- Mathematical modelling of a coil gun circuit.
- Improvement of the pulse shape of current in a coil so that the pullback effect of coil on the projectile reduces.
- Increasing the speed of coil gun above 100 m/s.
- Improvement in the efficiency of the coil gun.
- Development of non-lethal high voltage electric fence using fly-back transformer.
- Integration of high voltage electric fence and coil gun using motion sensors to form an automatic hybrid security system.
- Designing of underdamped RLC coil gun circuit, Cockroft Walton multiplier circuit, Control circuit, secondary coil circuitory for the improvement of pulse shape.
- Simulation of all the designed circuits were done and successfull results were obtained.
- Experimentation was done after obtaining the required results in simulation.
- Several attempts were done and optimal results were recorded under different conditions.
Our hybrid security system is suitable to install in a closed area. All the possible entrance of the restricted area is covered with the electric fence. Coil gun with sensors is installed in the restricted area. If someone crosses the electric fence, then coil gun detects and shoots the target immediately.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableOur Hybrid Security system consists of a coil gun and high voltage electric fence. Coil gun is able to accelerate a mild steel projectile having mass 11 gram, diameter 8mm and length 30mm to a speed of 105 m/sec. A 540uF capacitor bank with maximum voltage rating of 3150 V is used to provide a peak current pulse of 1400 A through the coil (having 146uH inductance) in 0.6 msec. Two thyristors, connected in series, are used for switching. The high voltage fence is being operated by a fly-back transformer that generates pulses of 30 kV at repetitive rate of 2000 pulses / sec with pulse energy of 0.1 J making it very nasty while keep it non-lethal
