Industrial Robotic Arm
Project Area of Specialization RoboticsProject SummaryOur final year project will be a 6 degree-of-freedom robotic arm aimed at being able to automate repetitive industrial tasks such as picking and placing, palletizing, and inspection while being able to adapt to different situations such as welding, soldering, CNC, etc, through the usage of an interchangeable tool head.
The initial design and prototyping will keep in mind the goal to commercialize this project as a locally produced industrial product within the next five years. Our group seeks to initiate a startup focused on improving the industrial sector of Pakistan through the use of automation and Industry 4.0/5.0 techniques. To showcase this resolve, our project will keep factors like IoT and remote automation in our scope and go through the necessary initial phase of finalizing our initial product design. We will focus on using rapid prototyping techniques such as 3D printing and acrylic manufacturing, as well as simulation software like MATLAB, LabView, and Onshape.
At the end of our project, we hope to have a fully functional robotic arm, complete with its own specification datasheet, a 3 kg payload, approximately a meter in fully extended length, and its own user-friendly software to interact, program and automate the robot through.
This project aims to accomplish the following:
- Industrial Implementation
- The Industrial Robotic Arm will be used to replace humans labor in industries. Specifically electronics manufacturing.
- Affordability
- Currently available robotics start at 2000$ . Our solution should cost around 1000$. (PKR 200,000)
- Expanding Skillset
- Designing and manufacturing this project will be a mechanical, electrical and software intensive task. It will prove to be a supreme learning opportunity encompassing the above stated fields.
- IoT System and Machine Automation
- Experience with IoT and automation for industrial applications.
- Provide more development into the adoption of modern automation techniques for Pakistan's industrial sector

The above figure explains our project implementation process. To reiterate in a step-wise manner, our implementation will consist of the following steps:
- Project Initation
- Technical knowledge
- Kinematic Analysis
- Technical specifications
- Design Stage
- Mechanical
- Electrical
- Programming
- Bill of Materials
- Ordering parts
- Manufacturing & Prototyping Stage
- 3D printed parts
- Start Assembly
- Test run first assembly
- Upgrade to casted aluminium parts
- Final assembly
- Refining parts
- Project Completion

- Within the approximate length of a 1 meter
- A footprint of no more than 30 by 30 centimeters
- 3 kg payload
- Fully custom controller programmed using the RUST programming language with custom PCB and in-house built software
- Casted Aluminium body, initially 3D printed
- Interchangeable tool head with the options of a gripper, a drill, and a soldering tool.
- Final cost of within 2 lakh.
