Zero Energy Building
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject Summary| Zero energy building is a building with zero net energy consumption meaning the total amount of energy used by the building on an annual basis is equal to the renewable energy created on the site. Three renewable energy sources that we will be using are Solar energy, hydro energy and wind energy. The source of solar energy will be the sunlight as we know and the source of hydro energy in our case is the drainage water of the building that is the water already used by the people. For electricity to be generated from sewerage water we will design a turbine according to our specifications in AutoCAD software and evaluate its performance using ansys. A generator will be designed using proper mathematical calculations and be coupled with the turbine to make electricity. For solar system we will use a hybrid solar system, some of the DC voltage according to calculations will be stored in batteries and converted to AC using inverters to be used in hours of load shedding and the rest of DC will also be converted to AC and then both AC’s will be synchronized using microcontroller and send to the grid. For electricity to be generated for wind we will use low speed wind turbine. Then it will be coupled with generator. This generator will also be made by us. Then will design rectifier and charge controllers. And store all energy produced by these sources into battery. |
Zero energy building is a building with zero net energy consumption meaning the total amount of energy used by the building on an annual basis is equal to the renewable energy created on the site.
Project Objectives- Electricity Generation from renewable energy sources (Solar, sewerage water based Hydro power and wind generation).
- To generate electricity from already used drainage water in order to maximize the use of natural resource that is water.
- To decrease dependency upon non-renewable resources and as an effect reduces emission of greenhouse gas for better environment.
- Designing of efficient and cost effective system for buildings to make them self-sufficient and remove their load from the grid.
- To overcome energy crisis
- Reduce dependence on fossil fuels
-
Reduce greenhouse gases and global warming
-
Protect our environment for future generation
- Simulations using proteus.
- PCB designing.
- Calculations.
- Turbine and Generating designing using AutoCAD.
- 3D printing of turbine and generating.
- Solar PV system.
- Low speed wind turbine.
- PIC Microcontroller Coding.
- Synchronizing of all energy sources.
- Arranging total assembly.
- Testing and Optimization
- Today more than 50% of energy is consumed by buildings and houses. The energy crisis that our country is facing will be greatly reduced by implementing ZEB on large scale.
- It will help in shifting from non-renewable energy resources as they are greatly decreasing day by day.
- Decreasing dependency on non-renewable energy projects will reduce CO2 emission as the energy sector is the largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.
- It will remove our dependency on dangerous energy projects such as nuclear power plants as the nuclear waste generated by nuclear reactors remains radioactive for tens to hundreds of thousands of year. So in order to safely store nuclear waste for such a long time is not 100% guaranteed.
- Electricity bills of buildings which are very high in amount can become zero or close to zero that is they become self-sustained.
Final deliverable will be a hardware prototype that will be functioning and generating energy from these three renewable energy sources. Energy contribution from sewerage will be small but remaining energy will be generated by other two sources. Turbine for sewerage will be designed and then 3D printed.
All these energy sources will be synchronized with each other and then will be synchronized with the grid and will be net metered.
