Zero Energy Building

Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject Summary

Zero energy building is a building with zero net energy consumption meaning the total amount of energy used by the building on an annual basis is equal to the renewable energy created on the site.  Three renewable energy sources that we will be using are Solar energy, hydro energy and wind energy. The source of solar energy will be the sunlight as we know and the source of hydro energy in our case is the drainage water of the building that is the water already used by the people.

For electricity to be generated from sewerage water we will design a turbine according to our specifications in AutoCAD software and evaluate its performance using ansys. A generator will be designed using proper mathematical calculations and be coupled with the turbine to make electricity. For solar system we will use a hybrid solar system, some of the DC voltage according to calculations will be stored in batteries and converted to AC using inverters to be used in hours of load shedding and the rest of DC will also be converted to AC and then both AC’s will be synchronized using microcontroller and send to the grid.

For electricity to be generated for wind we will use low speed wind turbine. Then it will be coupled with generator. This generator will also be made by us. Then will design rectifier and charge controllers. And store all energy produced by these sources into battery.

Benefits of the Project Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Final deliverable will be a hardware prototype that will be functioning and generating energy from these three renewable energy sources. Energy contribution from sewerage will be small but remaining energy will be generated by other two sources. Turbine for sewerage will be designed and then 3D printed.

All these energy sources will be synchronized with each other and then will be synchronized with the grid and will be net metered.
