Impurity detection and filtration of water using biosensors and EDR
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryOne of the biggest problems for global world is water pollution. Safely supplying the drinking water to consumers is a real struggle. We need to apply monitoring and purifying checks on it in real time. We are presenting the design and development of a low cost system for real time purifying and monitoring of water. The system consists of several sensors is used to measure physical, biological and chemical parameters of water, EDR is used to remove heavy metals from water, UV light system is used to kill microorganisms. The Arduino can be used as a core controller. Finally, sensor’s data will be displayed on LCD. Wavelength of UV light is 100 to 400 nm. Germicidal lamp has main spectral lines at 254, 313, 404, 437 and 546 nm. To kill bacteria, protozoa, and viruses, we need major of 254 nm spectral line. UV light has low pressure mercury-vapor and mixed noble gasses such as neon, argon, xenon and krypton (Koutchma, Forney et al. 2010). Inner surface of tube is fluorescent coating. Electrode is made of tungsten and coated with mixture of barium, strontium and calcium oxides because of low thermionic emission temperature (Jin Liu et al. 2007). UV filtration capacity depends on flowrate of water so we have to add a flowrate sensor to the system. For sensing microorganisms, we need to add thermal sensor at surface of water. Moreover, PH of water can also be disturbed naturally or by several activities which is not suitable for human health so we also have to add a PH sensor to the system to ensure safety. Normal PH of water is 6 to 8.5.
Project ObjectivesThe purpose of our project was to purify water for drinking and ensure that the water we have purified is actually pure by qualitative analysis of it. This analysis was being carried out by an electrical system which includes biosensors and electrical network which will translate our electrical response to numbers through which we will be able to decide that whether our water is pure or not.
Project Implementation MethodSolution we are proposing employs electrical mechanism for filtration of impure ions from water. The efficiency of removing heavy metals ion is very high them the already existing techniques. The basic advantage of this project is it employs only one method to remove all possible ions impurities from water. We don’t have to employs different method for filtration of different ions and impurities.

Keeping in mind the issue of availability of pure water for drinking purposes, how we might make it possible to assure availability of pure water by recycling industrial waste water and filtering sea water for drinking purposes.
Our primary target is to solve pure water shortage issues of backward areas of Sindh where there is no water supply and people have to drink water from swamps and other accumulated water of rain. This water have many types of contaminants form physical, chemical as well as biological. Second target is to assure pure water for industries workers which have to drink impure ground water.
