Hybrid UPS based on Supercapacitor Energy Storage and Adjustable Speed Generator
Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) is used to guarantee the reliability of backup power. Conventional
ESS for UPS is not too good due to low-power density and limited charge/discharge cycles of lead-acid
batteries. So we have proposed Supercapacitor based UPS due to the large capacitance value and
excellent charge-discharge performance of SC(about 20% of a common battery). For best option instead
of using lead-acid batteries based UPS, we are proposing Hybrid UPS based on Supercapacitor Energy
Storage and Speed Generator. Proposed system is based on an on-line (double conversion) UPS. H-UPS
consists of two controlled energy storage systems. The first one is a static energy storage system based
on supercapacitor bank. The second energy source is adjustable speed generating system supplying DC
link voltage. A control concept of the UPS operation, according short and long failure of the supply
utility voltage is developed. The H-UPS will be designed, built and tested. The control unit will be built
using based on PIC microcontroller. The design and system stability tuning will
be achieved using Matlab software.
Using Supercapacitors as an energy storing device.
• Connecting Supercapacitor banks and Adjustable Speed generator in parallel with the line
voltage to provide continuous power to the load without any interruption.
• The short charge time, long service life, good temperature characteristics, energy
conservation, and green environmental protection is the core of proposing and designing
of this project.
• Designing of bridge rectifiers.
• Designing of inverters.
• Designing of suitable Supercapacitor bank.
• Designing of DC-DC converter(Chopper).
• Designing of Control unit of all system using microcontroller.
• Designing and tuning system stability using PSIM software.
• Laboratory tests.
• The most important use of H-UPS is in the Operation Theatre(OT) during electricity short
fall until the generators get ready to give power to the devices in OT(Load).
• In industries, during load shedding, it will be beneficial in providing instant high current
until other power sources get ready.
• More important features are short charge time, long service life, good temperature
characteristics, energy conservation, and green environmental protection.
• Another most important feature is, when people use this high density supercapacitor based
H-UPS, will be beneficial for the country economy in the sense that this system could be
made on national level and could be import internationally to earn.
Hardware/Software Integrated system controlled by PIC microcontroller control system. Simulation will be done using Matlab software. After that all the system will be implemented in Hardware form and then will be assembled and tested in lab.
