Project Title

Hybrid Power Generation and its Wireless Monitoring and Data Acquisition System

Project Area of Specialization

Electrical/Electronic Engineering

Project Summary

Now a days, electricity is the basic necessity of daily life, the elctricity generation through fuel, gas or coal is expensive as compared to production of electricty thorugh renewable resources i.e. Sunlight or wind etc.

As our country, Pakistan is a developing country and it is difficult to meet the requirements of energy production using fuel, gas and coal etc. Hence, the use of clean and renewable power sources has become a matter of study.

The solar panels and wind turbines have presented an enormous advancement in electrical power generation; however, their main drawback is that there is no power generation, through solar panels in darkness, and through wind turbines when the wind speed is higher than the rotor can actually handle.

Hence, we have came up with an idea of integrating a system that combines these two electricity generation resources which has the capability of efficiently switching to the most suitable process at the time of operation.

Efficient monitoring of the parameters of generated power is severly important to prevent hazards and unfavorable conditions for the system. So, here in this work, we will be wirelessly monitoring and controlling the whole system.

Project Objectives

The first and most important objective of this project is to generate a hybrid energy generation system which can efficiently produce electricity using renewable resources such as sunlight and wind turbine with a feature of self switching between the two methods according to favorable conditions.

Another necessary objective of this work is to monitor and control the parameters of generated electricity such as voltages, current, active and reactive powers etc,

In short we are aiming

  • To generate cost effective electrical energy which is benificial for the environment.
  • To design a wireless network that provides real time data monitoring accurately and efficiently.

Project Implementation Method

Basically there are three phases of this project.

GENERATION OF ELECTRICITY

first phase of this project is electricity generation and we are generating elctricity through a hybrid system which is integrating two generation methods that is through solar panels and wind turbines.

CONVERSION FROM DC TO AC

the electricity being generated in the first phase is in DC form and the electricity required b load is always in AC form. So, in seconf phase of our project we will be designing an inverter which is capable of converting the generated DC into usable AC form.

WIRELESS MONITORING AND CONTROLLING

Monitoring and controlling of the generated electricity is extremely important because, if not taken care of, the parameters of electricity can over flow any time which can eventually end up in huge damage and disaster. So, in third phase the converted electricity is measured, monitored and controlled by using PLC/Arduino microcontrollers. Then these parameters will be sent over a wide distance using SCADA and wireless communication network, in order to make it accessable from anywhere and anytime.

Benefits of the Project

  • Production of clean and renewable energy.
  • From hybrid generation system, continous supply for remote areas.
  • Cost effective generation because it is a one time investment.
  • This energy can be utilized at DC charging stations for upcoming era of eectrical vehicles
  • Parameters of power generation can be wirelessly monitored and controlled hence safety and reduction of man power.
  • Environment friendly generation.
  • Reducing load on National Grid.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

  • Power generation of up to 300 watt from solar panels.
  • Power generation of upto 50 watt from wind turbine.
  • Parameters of electricity generated from both sources i.e. from solar panels and wind turbines is monitored.
  • These parameters include Heat Intensity of solar panels, RPM of wind turbine and their voltages, currents, active and reactive powers and power factor.
  • Whole system will be monitored efficiently.
