GIS based identification of urban hotspots, A case study of peshawar
Introduction
Extreme events (snow melt etc ) are increasing as a result of climate change and urban flooding is increasing due to extreme event and urbanization.
Globally, Every year natural disasters claim around 90,000 lives and affect more than 150 million around the world.
Among these, floods are the most intense threat to lives and livelihoods, impacting communities large and small, and inundating large swathes of land.
Unfortunately pakistan is among top 5 most vulnerable countries towards climate change and we can say that there is a severe lack of awareness about sustainable development and urban planning in Pakistan .
In the area of identifying urban hotspots no satisfactory research work has been done in Pakistan specially in KPK province.
Problem statement
The urban floods in the city causes great destruction and inconvenience with heavy traffic jam due to street water logging, paralyzes day to day activities, damage the urban infrastructure roads, bridges, electric poles etc causing severe economic damage as well.
Furthermore we don’t have proper measure to prevent flooding which includes sustainable drainage , permeable pavement and gardens etc.
In previous researches researcher had worked on GIS but for ground water vulnerability and we will study about surface water.
The researches we studied had identification of flood hotspots using some manual procedures containing statistical Data , Bar Graphs and pie charts etc while we will be using pure GIS tool merging tool (spatial Analyst tool) .
Furthermore we can say that no detailed work has been done in Pakistan for urban flooding .
Objectives
GIS-BASED IDENTIFICATION OF URBAN HOTSPOTS
•Delineation of flood-prone areas using the topographic wetness index (TWI)
•Using the inundation profiles for the calibration of the TWI threshold
•Delineation of geographical functional units using the Urban Morphology Types (UMT)
•Identification of urban hotspots by overlaying the TWI, UMT and Census population density datasets
DATA REQUIRED
TWI
•Resolution of DEM
•Topology of hydrographic models
•Existed infrastructure i.e Bridges, culverts etc.
Inundation profiles
•Rainfall curves,
•DEM ,DSM, Geology maps,
•Calculation of hydrographs
•Diffusion of total discharge
UMTs
•Formation and transformation of urban forms of cities , towns , villages etc.
BENEFITS
Technology used
The softwere we will be using in this project is Arc GIS
The additional tools we will be using here in this project includes google earth pro, and google map.
For finding urban flooding hotspot we will use technique of overlaying of different maps on each other
This project is purely based on field data and including popullation density of corresponding city i.e peshawar city .
Technically this project will have 4 major parts as mentioned in the methodology.
| Item Name | Type | No. of Units | Per Unit Cost (in Rs) | Total (in Rs) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Miscellaneous | Miscellaneous | 5 | 2000 | 10000 |
| Total in (Rs) | 10000 |
