Feasibility study on SCADA system for gas distribution network and its prototype development
Natural gas distribution systems play a fundamental role in delivering a primary energy resource toward industrial, tertiary and residential building. These networks assume today an increasing relevance due to growing energy demand and tighter environmental constrains, but they are still operated and managed according to old practices, without any smartness given by information and communication technologies.
In this project, a prototypal monitoring and controlling systems(SCADA) has been implemented on the natural gas network. Results prove that such an application can considerably upgrade the overall reliability and efficiency of the gas distribution process, also assuring the possibility of very fast interventions in case of leakage or breaking of pipes, cost effectiveness of the system, flow control with predictable benefits in terms of personal safety and economic savings.
Supervisory control and data acquisition is a multi layer system for high level process management. But uses other programmable controllers and discrete devices for its data acquisition, SCADA a in-house management system for the controlling and operations of the plant and various industrial models.
In SCADA the operator monitor and interface process commands and controlled set point through the master source of the SCADA system with SCADA computer, and all the remote devices are constrained with the effect of the Master system that is one of the block of the SCADA System.
Working domain of SCADA system implies in four categories they are data Collection, communication of data across the network, information reporting, and System control functions.
Data Collection involves assimilating data from various sensors while communication network provides the data sharing capability back to centralized locations.
Application Domain of SCADA is very wide in its operation although it’s a kind of a Giant system in which all the devices and controller are performing operations under it.
Distribution system of gases is one of the Application of the SCADA system in which the whole distribution of Gases is performed under the Supervisory system, while considering the application of the gases generally Include the involvement of the industrial process parameters. These parameters are directly supervised over the SCADA system and the controlling of it is done with the master feature of the SCADA system discussed above.
The addressable part of the SCADA system for the Gas distribution system is to redesign the whole distribution of the gases that is done under the convential method of the diaphragm based gas meters. And that topic is discussed with high Scope all around the world.
(1) Centralized monitoring of pipelines, which are more than fifty thousand kilometers in total area, for stable city gas transportation and supply.
(2) Localization of damaged areas and initial measures for security in disasters.
(3) Appropriate design, construction and maintenance for realizing monitoring and control from remote area.
Organizations dealing with the Gas is now in the main concern to automate their manual process Oil and Gas industry is generally considered to be a drilling and mechanical infrastructure based companies and somehow it is true but the recent trend of investing in technology and reducing the labor cost in the full stream imparts the need of SCADA over their business unit through-out the organizations.
Main streams are,
(1)Pressure(2)Leakage.(3)Flow.(4)RF communication.(5)Master control.(6)GUI
•Array of smoke sensor at the critical point and nodes to analysis and detect the leak detection.
•Pressure Analysis of the pipeline at the real time and its calibration with flow dynamics.
•End flow measurements and evaluation of usage and loss analysis.
•RF communications for the data transferring between RTU and MTU.
•GUI of Whole system at real time.
