Project Summary

The shielding gas is an essential component of gas shielded welding processes, its significant purpose is to protect the weld area from contamination from atmospheric gases and provide a transport medium for the electrical current to flow. The shielding gas composition is known to effect various weld aspects including mechanical properties and weld geometry. The first part of this study is to generate a computational model to simulate the effects of the shielding gas composition i.e. argon and helium mixtures on arc characteristics such as temperature distribution and electrical fields. The second part of the project is to carry out experimental GTAW on DH36 low carbon alloy steel to verify the results obtained from simulation and find the effect on weld penetration, weld width, weld strength and quality of weld formed i.e. surface quality.

Project Objectives

  • Evaluating the effects of shielding gas composition in gas tungsten arc welding.
  • Evaluating the effects of different shielding gas compositions on various arc characteristics i.e. temperature profiles, electric fields etc.
  • Experimental GTAW process to identify different weld characteristics i.e. weld penetration, weld width, weld strength and quality of weld i.e. surface quality formed with different ratios of argon and helium.
  • Comparison of different results by using diverse properties of shielding gases during the welding process.
  • Finding the optimum composition of shielding gases.

Benefits of the Project

The project will help in implementation of different shielding gases for unique welding applications and comparison of gas tungsten arc welding process under different compositions of shielding gases will result in optimization of the process which leads to an improved weld quality and strength. As GTAW is used in many different applications i.e. aerospace industry, nuclear power plants, automotive industry and many other such applications, it means a wide range of industries will benefit from the findings of the research which will help the society to grow. The developed numerical model can be used to carry out further research. The utilization of a specific composition of gases will result in a more efficient use of resources by the industries which would lead to sustainability.

  • A numerical model of gas tungsten arc welding to reflect real life process parameters.
  • Material properties data evaluation for different gases using various scientific techniques.
  • Results of experimental GTAW process on DH36 low carbon steel i.e. weld strength, penetration, surface quality etc.
