Project Title

Evaluating the Effects of Changing Backing Plates on the Friction Stir Welding Through Coupled Eulerian Lagrangian Approach.

Project Area of Specialization

Mechanical Engineering

Project Summary

Advanced joining processes such as Friction Stir Welding (FSW) are necessary to maintain manufacturing competitiveness in any industrial nation. This project will allow developing a numerical model of FSW of steel/aluminum in a finite element modelling (FEM) software Abaqus/Explicit. Effects of different backing plate materials on the friction stir weld will be studied. Various model outcomes such as stresses and temperature distribution in the work piece and the tool will then be analyzed and compared with results from the simple model. At later stage, experimentation of the FSW model will be done.

Project Objectives

  • Developing a full FSW numerical model and validating it with the previous research based on experiments.
  • Developing an FSW model with diverse backing plate materials and analyzing their influence on the welded work piece.
  • Validating the experimental results.

Project Implementation Method

Benefits of the Project

Direct Beneficiary: Student (doing the FYP)

  • Familiarization to the finite element method software Abaqus/Explicit along with other engineering softwares.
  • Familiarization to the student with research methodologies, data handling and scientific report writing along with possible article publication skills.

Indirect Beneficiary: Industry

  • Understanding of implementation of different kinds of backing plate materials for FSW based applications.
  • Further research on developing advanced numerical model of friction stir welding process with different backing plate materials.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

  • A numerical model of Friction Stir Welding (FSW) to reflect real life process parameters.
  • Analyzed data for different materials of backing plates using various scientific techniques.
  • Experimental model based on the FSW model developed in the ABAQUS Software.
  • Comparison of the results from simple model with changed backing plates results along with any experimental results from literature review.
