Project Summary

Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a noninvasive type of medical imaging in which the electrical conductivity, permittivity, and impedance of a part of the body (like lungs in our case) is inferred from surface electrode measurements and used to form a tomographic image of that part. 

Project Objectives

Development of a system that is radiation-free, non-invasive, and can produce images of lungs with a high temporary resolution for bedside ventilation.

Project Implementation Method

The current of 1 mA at 20 kHz is applied between two specific electrodes and the potential will be measured from the remaining electrodes. Through that, we are going to find the impedance and an impedance matrix will be formed and then an image reconstruction algorithm will reconstruct an image. This is shown below

Benefits of the Project

Electrical impedance tomography is a very promising technique for the noninvasive, radiation-free monitoring of lung function. It is widely applicable and safe for the patient, allowing real-time continuous monitoring of mechanical properties of the lungs over extended periods of time.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

An imaging system will be developed that can produce low cost, non-invasive, radiation-free, and high temporal resolution, but with a low spatial resolution image that can be used bedside for ventilation purposes.
