Project Summary

Elderly & disabled people prone to be dependet on caretaker. When a person becomes physically disabled or elder then he/she faces a lot of problem while moving one place to another. They use wheel chair for movement and to perform some necessary task. Previously, wheel chairs used by the elderly & disabled peoples are manual. For that kind of wheel chairs the person should be strong enough to control that, otherwise another person  should have to be with the person to operate the manual chair. Some patients who cannot manipulate the direction of the wheelchair with their arms due to weakness, they face many problems such as orientation, mobility etc. Therefore to overcome these problem, we will developed a smart  wheel Chair that will allow the end-user to perform safe movements and simply accomplish some daily life important tasks easily.

To fulfill the demands of elderly and disabled people, smart wheelchair has been proposed. It will provide independency and self-confidence to disabled people as well as it will help to improve mental health of these people.

Patients with mobility disability should be treated with dignity in all aspects of the health care encounter. If a disabled  person want to go anywhere this chair will help them to go their destination. This chair will use different type of sensors which will provide information and position the related person to their caretaker  through mobile application.   

A smart wheelchair (SW) system is developed in order to support safe mobility for disabled or elderly people with various impairments. The proposed SW offers two main functions: position detection  and detect the disabled person is fallen or sitting and send message to caretaker. The smart wheelchair will be trained and follow this path for the ease of disabled person. For example if disabled person want to go the kitchen or other place the user will just press a key from the application and the chair will move to the given destination.

Smart wheelchair for elderly and disabled people, integrating the new generation information technology of smart object, social mobile computing, is a convenient tool for monitoring real-time healthcare and interacting with environment according to the real-time health status, while they are living alone.

Project Objectives

  1. To reduce effort and man power to run the wheelchair
  2. To automatically monitor health of elderly and disabled people
  3. To improve the mobility and reduce the dependence of disabled and elderly people.

Project Implementation Method

Overview:

For implementation of this project we will require Software and hardware modules. Software will include Android application. Hardware modules will require A chair

. Tools:

  1. Arduino Uno(one)- (Microcontroller board based on the ATmega328P (datasheet), For publishing data online)
  2. Node MCU (Node Micro Controller Unit) raspberry  pie
  3. ESP-32 (Wi-Fi SoC from Expressive Systems)
  4. Motor Shield-Motor controller: L298P, Drives 2 DC motors or 1 stepper motor. Free running stop and brake function.
  5. Batteries Rechargeable 300mAH 18V
  6. Infrared Sensor to follow the line.
  7. Electric Motors.
  8. ESP-32 Camera Module for Arduino
  9. Wires, Bread Boards, Glue Guns.
  10. Servo Motors.
  11. Rechargeable Battery 30 volt DC.
  12. Temperature and Soil Moisture Sensors
  13. Lidar sensors

Benefits of the Project

The purpose of this robotic chair is to automate the wheel chair for disabled people. The main purpose of our project is to provide affordable, compact, multi-purpose robot  for their ease. It will be able to control the motion such as obstacle and hurdle automatically detect and move toward safe path. All of these functions will be performed using sensors and technologies .

An Smart wheelchair (SW) system is developed in order to support safe mobility for disabled or elderly people with various impairments. The proposed SW offers two main functions: obstacle detection and avoidance, and situation recognition.

  1. It will reduce human effort.
  2. Provide fast and simple way to move.
  3. Easy movement for disabled person in their home form one room to an other.
  4. Helpful for elderly who facing problem in movemnet due to medical unfitness of legs.
  5. Easily control smart wheelchair with mobile app.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Final Deliverable will contain

  1. A Robotic chair that will be controlled remotely through and Android mobile. This robot will move according to given commands from android phone.
  2. It will  be able to follow the predefined path on just one click.
  3. It will find hurdles in the  path on its own.
  4. An Android application.
  5. A fully working instruments automated module which can be controlled from android app. A remote button can on and off robot chair from anywhere any time.

Android app will send commands to web server. The server than communicates with Raspberry Pie and ESP 32 chips. All the sensors and DC motors are connected to these chips. These sensors receive signals from chips. Finally, the commands are executed.
