Project Summary

An electric bicycle is, first and foremost, a bicycle. It uses the same designs, geometries, and components as any other bicycle, but also includes an added electric motor. This is fueled by a rechargeable battery, which gives riders an extra boost of power and ultimately provides a smoother, more convenient, and less strenuous cycling experience. By eliminating many of the obstacles that keep people from cycling—obstacles such as headwinds, steep hills, and bike commutes that leave riders tired, messy, and sweaty—electric bikes help make the freedom, exhilaration, and satisfaction of cycling available and accessible to a wide range of potential cyclists.

Electric bicycle is a vehicle empowered by electric motor in order to move. It is also known as e-bike. For the power source of the electric motor, certain country used different power, because it depends on the Law of the country. Basically, rechargeable batteries that are used for the e-bike is 15 to 20mph which can travel 24 to 32km/h. The invention of the electric bike is as a proof that the engineering field keep advancing, the invention of the electric bicycle make it replacing the old bicycle in the market. Although the electric bicycles are using electric motor, it still called as bicycle rather than motorcycle. This is because it’s identity as bicycle is still fixed because most of its parts are belong to bicycle. So, it is not included in transportation law which require the certification and operation as on good motor vehicle. It is not needed to have license to ride the electric bicycle. The electric bicycle is not a fully motorized vehicle, it’s just semi motorized bicycle, which still have pedal, gearing, brake, and frame design and so on. This electric bike use Lithium ion battery which is a common power supply used on the electric bicycle. This kind of the battery is rechargeable and is lighter and have denser capacity  which makes the designing of an electric bicycle more handful and easier. The electric bicycle is not like a motorcycle in many concept, either it design or it power supply.

The electric bicycle is a project that can promote both cleaner technology as well as a lesser dependence on oil. It will run on clean electric power with the ability to recharge the battery through the 220 VAC wall source. An extra benefit to building the electric bicycle is that it can also show the general public how much cheaper it would be to convert their regular bicycle into an electric bicycle rather than driving solely in their gas-powered vehicles. The greater importance of the environment in the world leads to an opportunity for students in our position. With the economy trying to get out of one of the worst depressions of the century, there are numerous opportunities for us to help out. This is our opportunity to contribute a greener and more efficient planet.

Project Objectives

The objective of this project is to build an electric bike as the name indicates this system consists of a bicycle having battery and motor and other required components. Here the cycler will pedal the cycle due to which the battery will be charged and then this charged battery will supply electrical power to motor and hence the common bicycle will act as an E-bike. Following are the project objectives:

  • Replacement of conventionally fuelled vehicles within target groups with E-bikes.
  • E-bike market uptake in general.
  • To fabricate the E-bike using different components.
  • To test the E-bike under different circumstances.

Project Implementation Method

The basis of this project is to construct a system for an electric bike. They consist of a lithium-ion battery, a motor controller and a brushless DC motor. The power brakes and throttle/cruise controller are simple button systems that are used to trigger the functions for increasing speed, keeping the speed constant, and turning off the motor. The power source for the system was a DC battery source chosen to output 36V, which was the desired output voltage. A lithium ion battery was the most efficient choice for an electric bike because it offers high energy density while remaining relatively light-weight and compact in size.

The battery block is interfaced with the motor controller block. The motor controller controls all the functional capabilities and is the central component of the system. The basic requirement for the control is to regulate the amount of power applied to the motor, especially for DC motors. The motor controller can be adjusted to synchronize with other brushless motors. There are also many built-in functions for this controller that vary from detecting any malfunctions with the motor hall sensors, the throttle, and the brake levers to protect functions against excessive current and under-voltage, which are ideal for protecting the lithium ion battery.

The motor controller is then connected with the BLDC hub motor.

Benefits of the Project

Its applications and features are as follows.

  • Electric bikes give you all the freedom and benefits of cycling, with a little extra assistance. The result is less sweat, more miles and all the health benefits of life on two wheels.
  • Electric bikes have health benefits as they make you feel better, ride for longer and improve your fitness.
  • Electric bikes are economical. Only you have to charge the battery and this charge will be used for traveling purpose. The range of the bicycle travelled depends on the type of battery and your overall set-up.
  • Electric bikes are eco-friendly because they do not emit toxic gases as other vehicles do.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The final deliverable (electrical bicycle) will have the speed of in between 20 to 25 kph with the laden weight of about 106 kg. And the range of this bicycle will depend upon the ampere hours of the Li ion battery, greater the amp hours of the battery greater will be the distance travelled by the bicycle.
