Project Summary

Problem Statement:

Lighting is everywhere. Efficient lighting needs to accommodate certain parameters such as intensity, power quality etc. Practically lighting devices are restricted by parameters like harmonics, lumens-area ratio etc. It is our goal to minimize these restrictions. Most commercial light bulbs suffer from a severe depletion of their lifespans due to effects such as power surges and irregular harmonics. These parameters damage the quality and spread area of industrial light bulbs. This project makes use of R&D into the electronics of CFLs to determine the quality parameters such as spread area, watts/lumen of any standard industrial light bulb and takes an expert peek into the power being fed to the bulbs.

Proposed Solution:

Solution of this problem is building a test facility or chamber that is equipped with the necessary hardware to visualize all the necessary variables that can come across in determining the specifications of our bulb such as lumens, harmonics etc. By visiualizing this we will then counter these variables to adapt the best and suitable values to make our bulb more efficient.

Project Objectives

Objectives:

Our project objectives have been enlisted below

  1. To study the various parameters causing industrial light bulbs to lack maximum efficiency and life span.
  2. To develop a system that alerts the user as to the backdrops of any particular bulb.
  3. To design and implement an algorithm that detects abnormalities such as harmonics in the power system.
  4. To test the system using real loads and bulbs.
  5. To develop a testing facility which may be utilized by industries to assure the quality of their bulbs and other similar products.

Project Implementation Method

Implementation:

A testing facility of experimentally determined dimensions shall be host to any commercial bulb the user wants. Below will be a stepper motor mechanism which hoards a camera. The camera will be used to scan the light emitted from the bulb from all possible angles to best determine the light quality and spread area. This system shall be fed to a LabView Virtual Instrument, programmed to determine various parameters of the light in an experimental bid to determine its quality. This information shall be fed to the user in a user-friendly UI. A series of power apparatus shall be used to determine the quality of the power fed to the bulb and determine abnormalities in the bulb which may be a cause of decrease in the quality and life span of the bulb in question, such as harmonics. The user will get a quick and efficient response to the quality of the bulb and see whether it meets international standards or not.

Benefits of the Project

Benefits & Future Deliverables

This testing facility shall open the doors to quick and efficient testing of all such loads. This project will facilitate and will encourage engineers to work on products designed for quick and efficient quality testing and control of all such similar industrial loads so that industries can provide the best possible electronics to the market and help improve society one bulb at a time. A detailed study of the various parameters deteriorating quality and life span of loads will also help future engineers tackle these issues and in turn, help make better designed commercial electronics projects.

This project is determined to deliver maximum communities with its main applications

  • Commercial harmonics minimization

  • Standardizing the lighting quality

  • Improved ways to conserve energy

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Final Conclusion

The spread area enables us to determine the intensity of the load, as well as the opacity of the covering. Watts/lumen allowed us to determine the energy of the load. A study of harmonics as well as their determination for any particular load was done to discuss in detail the various shortcomings of too many harmonics in the system. The stepper motor camera mechanism allowed for quick and efficient image processing through which the quality of the light emitted was determined through a LabView Virtual Instrument. All these factors were determined with one goal: to get a little bit closer to the most possibly efficient load system in the market.

Technical Details

As mentioned earlier the project comprises of equipment that can visualize the variables and overcome the problems that are being faced. The first and foremost equipement that we have developed is the rod of the project that is equipped with a moveable camera and can be shown here,

Figure 1

As it can be from figure one, this rod will be fixed at the diameter of bulb with left side of the rod being directly under the bulb, the center is where the camera is fixed and one end is a freewheel which is intended to move in a circular direction to cover the rest of the light spread by the bulb.

The second piece of hardware is

Figure 2

The equipment on figure 2 is the base of the rod upon which our left end of the rod (reference from figure 1) will be fixed, this base will hold our rod and the servo motor will rotate it in circular direction to cover maximum lightspread by the bulb.

Besides the above shown equipment, we're still on our way to complete the rest of the necessary hardware to make this project successful and applicable in best manner possible
