Designing of Antitheft Smart Energy Meter
This is a smart Energy meter that is used to prevent the energy theft commonly caused by removing the ground wire from the energy meter and earthing it instead of sending the ground wire back to the Electricity Supplier. Microcontroller, Arduino, current and voltage sensor, and Magnetic Field Effect sensors are the main components of this project. This project is great invention and will be helpful alot for industry.
We shall use Arduino in this project and connect it with the Current Sensor, Voltage sensor modules and hall effect sensor. By the use of coding we shall calculate the billing method of this energy meter. It will be anti-theft as, even if the thief removes the neutral wire from the energy meter and connects the Earth wire in the place of neutral wire, then the energy meter would still operate. If he tries to physically break the energy meter or try to interrupt the bill calculation of the meter then a program in the meter would notify the electrical company of the theft.
Anti-theft metering system is a system where there are minimum chances of theft in power system. Now-adays energy theft from distribution system or transmission line is major issue, so to protect and for utilize the energy generated anti-theft metering system is developed. Due to parallel connection with all the consumers it’s quite difficult to find exact location of tapping because we can’t monitor individual consumption.
In today’s era of technology power system network has grown up to a good extension which leads to both; on the first hand it provides an as of access that we have energy at our doorstep independent of required power on the other hand it also produce fear in the mind of distribution agency and the fear is of energy theft. The weighted average system loss in the power sector in totality is estimated at 25% which includes 16% Technical loss. The balance 9% is due to pilferage, theft, and un-authorized use of electricity. In many distributions system the amount of theft is 1-2% in terms of electricity generated, so the financial loss is high due to this 1- 2% of theft in distribution system. So, to protect from this energy theft anti-theft metering system is developed.
In a simple energy meter, there are two input wires and two output wires. Let us call them Phase1, Neutral1 and Phase2, Neutral2 respectively. A theft happens when a consumer removes the Neutral2 wire and earths its. In this was he will get the full supply of electricity but his energy meter would not calculate the electricity bill.
Also some consumers smash the energy meter with a hard object to break it.
So to prevent these kind of Energy Thefts, we are designing a digital and smart energy meter that will not only be antitheft but also pin-points the location of theft as well. When a current carrying wire is supplying electricity to a load, a magnetic field happens to circulate around the wire. Although this alternating magnetic field is quite low , we will design a module which will calculate and amplify this small magnetic field and then, measure the Energy consumed. This energy meter will not operate unless a Neutral2 wire is given to it. Even if he connects the external earth wire or smashes the energy meter, either way the theft will be detected and thief would be pin-pointed.
