Design of Self Balancing Attachment For Motorbikes Using Mechanical Gyroscopes, Aimed for Improved Safety.
Our project involves the use a gyroscope on a motorcycle. Gyroscope is nothing more than a spinning wheel which has considerable mass, having high angular velocity, which generates a balancing force opposite to the actual motion of the body which is to be balanced. The purpose of using gyroscope is to convert a normal two wheel vehicle into an auto balancing two wheel vehicle. If motor cycle is falling on one side, gyroscope will provide momentum in opposite direction. Momentum will be generated by the rotation of gyroscope wheels, and that wheel rotation will be achieved by the power supply from motorcycle engine. Control system will be designed in project to make sure that gyroscope give the output according to the required value. Our design would involve vertical pair of gyroscopes installed on Honda motor bike.
Firstly, we will be using the motorcycle engine as our power supply to rotate the gyroscopes about their axes. This power will also be electrically transferred to our accelerometer and gyro sensor that will be sensing motion about the bike’s axis and will be actuating the mechanical gyroscopes according to the tilt of the bike about its axis. These sensors will be connected to a main controller that will entail a control system for the self-balancing act programmed onto it using MATLAB.
Following are the two unmet needs relating to motorcycle riding and will be fulfilled by our project.
1- Presence of safety system for motorcycle riders (high chances of bike falling at lower speed i.e. stalling or turning)
2-Balancing aid for handicapped people. Although there exists a design involving the attachment of two wheels on the rear side, but it consumes a lot of space.
Aim of our project is to fulfil following deliverables:
Control system design for which we will be designing a self-balancing control system on MATLAB and will be simulating results. This deliverable will fulfil our last objective
