Design and Implementation of Object Sorting Machine

The given project is an automated object sorting conveyor belt system based on hardware in a loop concept and proposed as a solution to reduce man power in industries and commercial markets. The MATLAB Simulink software is used to control the conveyor belt system by a two way communication process.

Project Summary

The given project is an automated object sorting conveyor belt system based on hardware in a loop concept and proposed as a solution to reduce man power in industries and commercial markets. The MATLAB Simulink software is used to control the conveyor belt system by a two way communication process. In the two way communication process, data acquisition and signal extraction from MATLAB Simulink is performed in a real time continuous loop for monitoring and controlling purposes. The Self-Identification System is installed in it which will allow the user to identify the objects and the object can be differentiated by the help of wipers, they will move the objects to their respective places. Also it will give us the knowledge about the height of the object. Wipers are connected to the servo motors by the help of which it swipes the incoming objects on the conveyor belt and place them in different racks. In this way, the automated sorting of objects on the conveyor belt is performed without any labor force. This project can be used in numerous largescale and small scale applications such as production industries, packaging industries and small markets where labor force is required all the time. Firstly, in the start of the system such sensors are used which allow the conveyer belt to move only at a time when the product is placed on it otherwise it will not move, this can also save electricity because conveyer belt will not be moving all the time, it will only move when it is required for the purpose. Also barcode scanner, mounted on the conveyor belt, is used to sort different objects on the basis of their barcode values. Each object on the conveyor belt is scanned by the barcode and the barcode signal is sent to the MATLAB Simulink via micro-controller. In the MATLAB Simulink, the received barcode signal is decoded and using the decoded information, an activating signal is generated in the MATLAB Simulink. The activating signal is extracted from MATLAB Simulink via micro-controller and used to activate the servo motors situated on the conveyor belt.

•Automatic sorting of objects on the conveyer belt by implementing above mentioned idea

Project Implementation Method

Basic Principle

Signal extraction and data acquisition by interfacing  MATLAB Simulink with Microcontroller in real time.

1.The conveyor belt is driven by a 12 volt DC motor. Speed of the conveyor belt can be continuously controlled in a MATLAB SIMULINK.

2.. Relay circuit is used for the automation of conveyer belt. When the object is placed on the belt, it moves otherwise it is stationary and it reduces manual work and electricity.

3.The barcode reader differentiates objects on the basis of their object. It generates a signal depending on the code of the object. The signal will be read in the MATLAB Simulink via micro-controller.

4.Counter Circuit is used to count the number of items which moves on the conveyer belt.

5.The servo motors are activated from the Simulink model with an activating signal. A flapper is attached to each servo motor to place the incoming objects in different racks.

6.The micro-controller is acting like a bridge between hardware and software. It develops the communication between MATLAB Simulink and conveyor belt system.
