Project Summary

In the era of emerging technology, every man jack is directly or indirectly dependent on technology that has made our lives easier. Under the umbrella of technologies, 3D printing has also disrupted traditional manufacturing processes. Nevertheless the issue is up till now is the cost-effective and time-proven single package of 3D scanner and 3D printer has not been designed. Furthermore it needs some human interference and time to process due to instructions of the CAD model. 
This project will merge two technologies of 3D-printing and 3D- scanning and an innovative new single system package with capability of 3D-printing under the assistance/instructions* of 3D-scanner. By Innovating this single system package we can perform rapid prototyping in just a short amount of time.

Project Objectives

There are 4 main objective of this project which are as under:

  1. To develop CAD of 3D scanner and 3D printer as a single system package.
  2. Material selection and assembly 3D scanner and 3D printer with desired components.
  3. To design a control system to merge both processes.
  4. To perform experiments (scanning & printing) and analyze results.

Project Implementation Method

This project is divided into 5 main phases. 

The first phase will be collecting data of coordinates by using distance sensors.
The second phase will be transferring data to Cloud with assistance of Node MCU.
The third phase will be running the python program in the cloud.
The fourth phase will be converting code from point cloud to G-code. 
The fifth phase will be giving instructions to the printer under the assistance of a laptop.

There are several benefits depends upon the organization, some general benefits are:

  • Cost effective and time efficient.
  • User-friendly and flexible prototype.
  • Doesn’t require much human involvement.
  • It can be used for quality assurance and inspection.
  • It can used for reverse engineering.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Our project is hardware and software integrated system, consisting of 3D scanner (A 3D scanner expands the capabilities of a 3D printer, allowing you to replicate the shape of any object into CAD model) and 3d printer (a 3D printer allowing you to convert CAD model into physical form). Our project is used to make a replica of any object without making its CAD model. It works as an integration of 3D scanner and 3D printer. At first, we collect data from distance sensor then upload it into cloud using NodeMCU then we convert that file into G code using python libraries and finally provide it to 3D printer to get our final product.
