DESIGN AND FABRICATION OF SELF SUSTAINED WATER PUMP
Project Area of Specialization Mechanical EngineeringProject SummaryWater is the most important resource on earth without which life is impossible. Water is used in almost every industry. Plenty amount of water is required for the effective growth of crop. The conventional system for pumping the water is very costly and have bad effects on environment. Grid connected power pumps required availability of electricity for its operation, and more than 600 million people across 50 countries have no access to electricity and in Pakistan this number is around 50 million according to World Bank collection of development indicators. Moreover the areas having large irrigated areas, the government has subsidized electricity for irrigation. The diesel/petrol powered pumps have high maintenance costs, short life expectancy, have high operational costs and produces noise and air pollution. We are working on the development of a pump which drives the water to the required destination in a cheap and sustainable way. The self-sustained Spiral-tube Water wheel (Also known as Spiral Pump) is an effective water pumping device which uses the kinetic energy of flowing water for its operation. This water-wheel is the combination of spiral tube and turbine blades; the blades only help the spiral to rotate hence replace the motor in conventional pumps which is run by electricity. This makes water wheel special as its running cost is zero and requires very less maintenance. Unlike other pumps it can be operated day and night at zero cost and without any interruption as long as there is a stream of flowing water. It is sustainable and environment friendly as no fuel is burnt for its operation. This project aims to design Spiral pump for driving water to height of 12 feet and to a distance of 2 KM. This project will also propose the parameters for designing the up-scale model for higher outputs.
Project ObjectivesThe aim of this project is to design and fabricate a self-sustained water pump in order to provide a cheap and sustainable source of water pumping to the farmers (Especially in hilly areas) mainly and other small-scale industries. Many water streams, rivers and canals are flowing have enough kinetic energy especially in mountainous areas, the main objective of this project is to design a pump which will use this free Kinetic energy for driving the water uphill or from one place to another. The conventional fuel (mainly electricity in Pakistan) is limited in our country, the use of this pump will make the society self-sustained in terms of fuel and will make pumping phenomenon free of cost. This water wheel will have zero running cost and least maintenance cost. The huge benefit of this water wheel is that it can drive water day and night to a desired location. On top of that this pump is hundred percent pollution free.
Besides the conventional fuel pump the solar pump are also in the market but they can only supply water in sunny day. For the day and night running of solar you need to rely on batteries which are costly and deteriorate with time. Our project will permanently solve the above-mentioned issues with zero maintenance cost.
This water wheel will enhance the lifestyle of domestic farmers and small industries. Hence the society will become self-sufficient.
Project Implementation MethodThis pump consists of spiral pipe or tube fitted on the periphery of water wheel having blades that are rotated by running water. This pump operate in any running water stream, river or canal which have depth of minimum 0.3 meters and velocity of minimum 0.6 meters per second. In our case we designed a pump for the Naguman River in district Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa having depth of 0.75 meters and velocity of 1.3 m/s the pump is taken to the river for testing, it has floating base and can be easily placed in a river. The running water rotate the wheel, and the spiral fitted with the water wheel also rotate, the input of the spiral collect water in the half cycle while in the other half cycle since the input is in the air, it rushes air inside, which is then compressed when another gulp of water rushes in, in this way pump push the water. The output of the spiral pipe is connected to rotating joint which convert the rotating motion of the spiral output pipe into static one and act as a connection between static and rotating pipe. The water is pumped through this pipe up to 2 km far. This pump will operate as long as it is in the running water and can be brought out of water after operation.
Benefits of the ProjectThe “Self-sustained water pump”, pump the water without electricity. The global efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emission, the increase focus on renewable energy is making this pump best option for a pumping water especially in rural areas and developing countries. This water pump work without any fuel or electricity. Since the needed energy is supplied by flowing water. This pump will save up to 70-75% Overall life time cost as compared to diesel pump. This pump require no running cost and it is environment friendly. This project has many positive economic and environmental impact.
The conventional energy sources are costly and have high maintenance and running cost and affect environment. Their other alternative, solar system cannot supply water at night if we want to supply water at night it requires batteries which are also costly arrangements, but this water pump cover all these aspects, as it can supply water at any time without any interruption.
It has zero running and low maintenance cost and it is pollution free, environmental friendly and cheap source in a single Time. A small scale farmer can get huge benefit of it. In a region where flowing water is available, artificial fish farms can be made and this pump can supply water with zero cost which can help in improving in economic condition of people as it helps in developing in small businesses.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableMinimum requirement to run the water wheel spiral pump is that the water flowing speed should be minimum 0.6 meters per second and the depth of the stream, river or canal should be 0.3 meters or more. The site which we selected has depth of 0.75 meters and the flow velocity is 1.3 meters per second. Our target is to pump the water to minimum 12 feet up and 2 km far, so based on our requirements we end up with the following calculations
- The Diameter of the spiral is 1.5 meters
- Number of turns of the spiral are 5
- Diameter of the cover is 1.65 meters
- Length of the shaft is 1.75 meters
- Diameter of the shaft is 76 millimeters
- Length of the blade is 0.61 meters
- Width of the blade is 0.46 meters
- Blade angle is 10°
- Number of plates are 8
These dimensions are for requirement it can be modified according to the requirements
