Autonomous Sorting Conveyer
Project Area of Specialization RoboticsProject SummarySorting and separating packages have been revolutionized with the help of a customized conveyer table which uses omniwheels instead of the conventional conveyer belts to align and separate packages in all possible directions with a better throughput and higher productivity rate. In our prototype we shall be using a sorting table consisting free rotational wheels which will allow sorting of boxes to be highly efficient with low maintenance cost.
With the development of the Internet, online shopping has become more and more popular. Currently, most of the types of logistics on the market are manual goods classification, and types of manual goods are inefficient and prone to errors. Although very few logistics companies use machines to sort goods, these machines are usually sent in one direction and the position of the goods on the machine is random, these sorters do not can efficiently categorize goods let alone route planning independently for goods and chooses the optimal path for them.
Sorting procedures are required in many industries, such as manufacturing, where strict quality control must be maintained. Every sorting process is different, but generally consists of looking at objects dispersed on a moving conveyor belt, finding individual items, recognizing relevant characteristics that are acceptable or unacceptable, and capturing them to perform the necessary separation where applicable.
Omni-directional wheels have been used for many years in robotics, industry, and logistics. The main source of omnidirectional wheels are companies that manufacture them for omnidirectional conveyor systems, for example, for packaging handling. Universal wheel for omnidirectional robots. The omnidirectional robot can steer along the line from point A to point B, while rotating along the line to reach position with precise orientation. Multi-directional wheels have also been used for wheelchairs, airport service vehicles and many other applications.
- Moving towards automated processes to boost throughput, cut costs, and meet growing customer demand.
- Using this conveyer, we can sort/separate case goods and smaller palletized loads autonomously.
- Improving sorting productivity by eliminating manual travel traditionally done with a conventional conveyor belt.
We have designed a conveyer table with the help of acrylic sheet cutout which will have slots for placing omniwheels and normal wheels. Those wheels will be controlled by their respective motor drivers which in return are connected to the Arduino micro controller which controls the movement of wheels as to which direction of rotation is required depending on which conveyer output will they be placed on. For input we will use a regular conveyer belt to place the box with steady motion onto the table which will help sort out the box in 3 different directions right, left, straight. The output will consist of rollers on which the boxes will slide onto after being rotated by the wheels on the table.
Benefits of the ProjectOur conveyer table aims at a lot of benefits such as;
- This table will be able to autonomously sort and separate palletes or boxes in warehouses, or cargo sites.
- It offers a quicker and highly efficient solution to sorting goods.
- It is environment friendly as to limited energy consumption.
- The use of wheels on the table to sort will help increase prodcutivity and lower maintenance cost by a margiin.
Our prototype will consist of the hardware table structure which will include all the separating infrastructure which includes the omniwheels providing free rotation, then we have the motors which are interconnected to the motor drivers and all connections are linked to an Arduino mega controller which is programmed to control the rotational movement of wheels. Other than that for the output we will place rollers which allow boxes to smoothly slide onto them and for the input we will use a conventional conveyer belt which will allow the boxes to follow on to the conveyer in a straight fashion.
