The project aims to develop Solar powered hybrid inverter for our electrical engineering department BZU, Multan. We are working on both hardware and simulation platform. While our project consists of solar panel, inverter circuit which is actually the hybrid inverter, also we have a backup circuit. The beauty of the solar power supply lies in capturing the light energy and generating electrical energy, that can be used both as online energy source (online grid) in case of power failure and also as independent energy source (OFF grid). One of the leading problems of our country is electricity, which could be overcome by usage of solar power. Last but not the least, it is environment friendly and renewable energy viable for long term. It is an unlimited source of power which is free, unlike deleterious fossil fuels which are expensive as well.

Project Objectives

Project Objective:

• The main objective of this project is to make the environment free of pollution by using renewable energy source i.e., solar energy.
• We also have aim to fabricate the hybrid inverter.
• We aim to utilize the maximum energy from the solar plated by MPPT technique.
• We aim to provide the most economical solar system for our department.
• The most important objective is that this project is most-economical and most efficient one.

Project Implementation Method

Project Implementation Method:

Our project implementation method includes both hardware and simulation platform. First, we have a planning session to discuss the road-map of the project. Then we have our simulation part, for which we are using MATLAB-Simulink. In Simulation part, we totally designed our project on the Simulink and analysis its output keenly. Then comes the final part our hardware, then we implement our project in hardware and shape the project in its real form. In sha Allah we will have our desired result at the end of the project.

Benefits of Hybrid Inverter

Following are the benefits of hybrid inverter:

1. Continuous power supply- The hybrid solar systems provide power continuously, without any interruption, as the batteries connected to them store the energy. So, when there is an electricity outage, the batteries work as inverter to provide you backup. This is also the case during the evening or night time when there is no sun and energy is not being generated; batteries provide the back-up and life goes on without any interruption.

2. Utilize the renewable sources in best way- Because the batteries are connected to the system to store the energy, there is no waste of the excess energy generated on bright sunny days. So, these systems make use of the renewable energy. in best way, storing energy on a good day and utilize the stored power on a bad day. The balance is maintained.

3. Low maintenance cost - The maintenance cost of the hybrid solar energy systems is low as compared to the traditional generators which use diesel as fuel. No fuel is used and they do not require frequent servicing.

4. High efficiency - The hybrid solar energy systems work more efficiently than your traditional generators which waste the fuel under certain conditions. Hybrid solar systems work efficiently in all types of conditions without wasting the fuel.

5. Load management -  Unlike traditional generators, which provide high power as soon as they turned on, most of hybrid solar power systems manage load accordingly. A hybrid solar system may have technology that adjusts the energy supply according to the devices they are connected to, whether it’s an air conditioner requiring high power or a fan which requires less.

6. DC-Coupled Options- There are plenty of hybrid solar inverters which are DC-coupled, meaning they take the DC power from your solar panels and feed it directly through to your battery, without converting it to AC and back in the process. This ensures you get the most value from the electricity your solar panels produce in a battery backup system.

7.Smart inverter features- Hybrid inverters come with a built-in charge controller to detect when it’s best to send electricity to your battery from the grid (or your solar panels). Several models can be programmed to allow for load shifting and peak shaving. This means you can use your battery during times when grid electricity costs the most, and charge your battery when grid electricity costs the least - thereby saving you a lot of money in the process.

8. Reduces Greenhouse Effect- Solar energy decreases the greenhouse effect as well as abnormal weather change.

9. Saves Money- By using solar products, we can save money by reducing electricity bills.

10. No Maintenance- there is probably no maintence of the system, only require cleaning.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Our project technical deliverables are:

1. To fabricate a new technology of UPS(Uninterrupted Power Supply) that is Hybrid inverter by utilizing renewable energy resource i.e. Sun/Solar energy.
2. Utilizing Solar Hybrid inverter in Charging the battery in daylight and also driving the load at a time from solar energy or WAPDA supply when needed.
3. To provide Fast switching speed by using simple power electronic MOSFET driver circuit.
4. Designing a simulation based circuit of Solar Hybrid Inverter on the MATLAB Simulink for the load of Electrical Engineering department of UCET BZU.
