Design and Development of Low Power Biomass Pellet Machine
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryIn the recent years, the energy needs of Pakistan has increased immensely due to various reasons like constantly increasing population, economic development then another factor that is based on the previous one is that unfair distribution of energy resources. Now, the energy deficit in Pakistan is around 6,500 MW and along with it our resources are rapidly decreasing. Because of this primary reason country and its individuals are adapting new and renewable power generation sources as well as renewable fuels. Biomass fuels are one of the many options among renewable energy sources/fuels. Research findings reveal that the abundant biomass resources of the country include fuelwood, agricultural residues, animal dung, and municipal solid waste. 48% of the domestic energy needs are being fulfilled from fuelwood, while another 32% by crop and animal residues. 85 sugar industries of the country produce enough bagasse to generate 5800 GWh of electricity. Corn stalk, sugarcane trash, rice straw, wheat straw, and cotton stalks are the major crop residues having a production of 6.43, 8.94, 17.86, 35.6, and 50.6 Mt, respectively. The power generation potential from animal dung is 4800–5600 MW. Similarly, the electricity generation potential of municipal solid waste by thermochemical and biochemical conversion is 560 kWh/t and 220 kWh/t, respectively. So, Pakistan has the potential to run 15 million biogas power plants successfully. A major advantage of biomass fuels is that it is manufactured from recycling of waste materials so instead of just disposing off the waste we can utilize it in fulfilling our needs.
Project ObjectivesFollowing are the aims and objectives we expect to achieve from our project:
- To replace conventional fuels such as natural gas, petroleum, coal etc.
- To produce/manufacture maximum number of bio-mass pellets while utilizing minimum power.
- To make the bio-mass pellet machine work efficiently and effectively by integrating VFD with motor to achieve the maximum outcome.
- To operate and monitor bio-mass pellet machine through an application.
The project “design and development of biomass pellet machine” will be implemented by using a 3 phase motor and a single to three phase variable frequency drive VFD inverter for frequency control to ensure minimal power losses and maximum production rate. The VFD and motor will be integrated with the machine hardware so that machine will run in such a way that it will produce an eco friendly fuel in the form small wooden pellets. The ESP8266 microcontroller is also used to make wifi/bluetooth communication possible between smart phone and the machine to track different parameters on a smartphone screen. The load cell will be placed on the machine’s platform to measure weight of the residue/waste/raw materials. At the final stage, the power will be calculated and compared with and without using VFD, so that the efficiency of the machine can be tested.
Benefits of the ProjectBiogas fuels has several applications as being a fuel. Like,
•The biogas pallets/briquettes can be used as a substitute of natural gas or coal smaller household purposes as in for cooking or heating purposes.
•Biomass material without the process of being pelletized only possesses low thermal value yet high greenhouse gas emissions such as carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide which are the killer of ozone. Speaking of industrial use of Biomass material, the scale of use goes quite extensive and the air pollution issue will become more intense. However, the application of wood pellets will solve the problems. Besides, the large-scale use of biomass pellets will enhance the thermal value of biomass waste material during heating and the pollutant emissions will decrease significantly. Therefore, The transformation of energy structure from fossil fuel into biomass pellets use has been developing in full swing. Therefore, if it is utilized on industrial level to produce electricity and goods, run machines etc. it can there be quite beneficial as well.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe final outcome will be an efficient biomass pellet machine for producing fuel in the form of wooden pellets that ensures lowest possible level of emissions so that it might not affect our environment as compared with traditional fuels being used until now. Other than that, the same machine can also be used with multipurpose applications such as producing animals feed in bulk quantities with much less amount of time.
