Project Summary

Security and privacy have been a major concern for public and state. Drones have emerged as a menace in both these domains. This project aimed at Design and Development of a cost-effective Jammer for Anti-Drone System is an effort to address both these issues. Drones are controlled by remote, physically, or can be programmed by putting in autonomous mode. Jamming is the process of blocking the transmission to disrupt communications between the drone and the pilot. Anti-drone system will jam the command and navigation signals of a drone. For jamming, the drone transmitter (antenna) must be tuned to the same frequency as the receiver and typically requires more power than the pilot’s transmitter. Therefore, two oscillators would be required out of which one would tackle for command frequencies, and one will jam the GPS mode. After the generation of signals by oscillators’ noise will be added to the signal using noise sources and transmitted using directional antenna. The designed system will be able to disrupt both these modes. Drones primarily operate at frequencies between 433MHz to 2.4GHz. Most Remote-Controlled Drones use the 433MHz frequency while drones with camera transmitters often use 2.4 GHz frequency. However, some of the latest drones using GPS use 1.575GHz frequency. The developing of this system requires sufficient knowledge and literature review in the field of Microwave Engineering and Electronic Warfare.

Project Objectives

  • Design and Development of cost-effective jammer for anti-drone system
  • The system aims to jam remote control  within a range of 50m to make the drone ineffective
  •  Jamming of remote controlled and GPS drones operating at 2.4GHz and 1.575GHz respectively

Project Implementation Method

Components required for project implementation are:

  1. Voltage Controlled Oscillators 
  2. Noise Sources 
  3. Power Amplifiers 
  4. Antennas in RF and Microwave Frequency range 
  5. Misc Electronics Component and Mechanical fixtures

For jamming, the drone transmitter (antenna) must be tuned to the same frequency as the receiver and typically requires more power than the pilot’s transmitter. Therefore, two oscillators would be required out of which one would tackle for command frequency 2.4GHz, and one will jam the GPS frequency 1.575GHz. After the generation of signals by oscillators’ noise will be added to the signal using noise sources and transmitted using directional antenna. The power amplifier will increse the transmiited power of jammer so that it can overcome the power of drone. The designed system will be able to disrupt both these modes.
