Design and development of a drilling machine to perforate PVC pipes
PVC pipes have many applications throughout world. In Pakistan, it has used as a water filrer in bore system. For that purpose, pipes must be perforated with desired holes. The drilling machine is used to perforate holes. In conventional machine, the pipes are drilled manually. It has found that it consumes more time and man power.The working mechanism of our machine is easy to understad. In our drilling machine, the vertical motion of drill is controlled by stepper mottor and the horizontal motion of drill frame on which drill is installed is controlled by Arduino. By the automation of these two components the productivity of pipes increased and man power is reduced. The 4 pipes are prepared as compared to conventional drilling machine. One man is required to operate that machine. In future work, the complete automation can be done with the automation of pipe holders and rotation of pipes.
1. First step in project was to design different parts of machine using SOLIDWORKS (CAD software). Firstly we designed Pipe holders to hold the pipe in its place and then secondly we designed the Main frame on which pipe holding devices were to be assembled.
After that Drill Machine mechanism were designed and then at Last Drill frame was designed.
2. Simulation: After Designing 3d CAD models of all machine parts Static structure analysis was done on each designed part to check the feasibility of each designed part during implementation.
3. Material Selection: Material selection was done during designing and simulation phase.
4. Fabrication: We started from fabrication of Pipe Holders then fabricated the Main frame and Drill frame and Drilling Mechanism.
All Fabrication was done by our own hand in Mechanical workshop of our University.
5. Assembly: Assembly of all Fabricated parts was done according to our design.
6. Operation and Results: After assembly and all electrical connections machine was operated and results were calculated.
The project has many benifits as compared to conventional drilling machine. In conventional drilling machine the more man power is required. The two persons are just required for handling of pipes. The third person drilled the holes at required position. In our drilling machine, the pipes are handled with pipe holders at both sides. By this, time is reduced. The labour is reduced also. Further the accuracy is also improved by callibration of scaling on drill frame and pipe holders. According to required position, the drill frame is moved and pipe holders are rotated with desired angle.
The second benefit is that the deassembly of that machine is easy. The parts are easily avaialble in market.
The third benfit is that the new startup will also start by that machine. The local workshops can buy this machine and improve thier productivity. Morever, it will also help in country economy by export this machine in a reasonable price.
Machine is able to hold cylinderical PVC pipe of size ranges from 2.5 to 3.5 inch diameter and of length 36 inches. At one end to machine a divider is installed to rotate the pipe at any angle. Arduino uno microcontroller and stepper motor is used to control the vertical motion of drill by using a joystick. Drill chuck can hold drill of size ranges from 1/16 to 3/8 inch.
Drill can move horizontally using Sprocket and chain mechanism manually. A scale is attached to measure the horizontal distance between consecutive holes. You can set any distance you want according to application. Two rotations of sprocket will move the drill to 1 inch.
Out of Scope(Limitations):
1. Pipe holders are designed to hold cylinderical pipes only.
2. Machine is designed to Perforate PVC Pipes only and cannot use to drill pipes of other materials.
