Project Title

Design Analysis and Fabrication of Wrist Orthosis Using Fused Deposition Modelling

Project Area of Specialization 3D/4D PrintingProject Summary

Assistive devices like wrist orthosis are used for the cure of a syndrome called Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Fabrication of wrist orthosis using Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3d printing is challenging for the end-users. The use of the above-mentioned technology is not very common in Pakistan. The conventional fabrication process of these products is skill-dependent, time-consuming, and shows problems concerning Aesthetics. FDM technology provides flexibility in design which affects the aesthetics aspect as well. So this study focuses on 3d scanning and manufacturing of wrist orthosis. In this project we are focusing on selecting best material for our prodcut based on the SolidWorks Simulation results. Next we are focusing on scanning wrist using 3D scanner. Static analysis of scanned part is to be done using Simulation. The part is then manufactured using FDM 3d Printer. On other hand, a prediction model using SVR is also developed for tensile test data performed at different levels of three process parameters i.e. infill density, temperature and speed.

Project Objectives Project Implementation Method

An assistive device namely wrist orthosis has been selected based on the need of the product. Material selection for the product will be done based on SolidWorks simulation. The required dimensions of orthosis will be retrieved based on 3D scanning. Then the scanned part will be converted to available CAD/CAM software (SolidWorks). Static Analysis of part design will be done in mentioned software. Then for 3d printing, it will be converted to .STL file. It will be then fabricated using FDM 3d Printer. A factorial design is created for three process parameters (infill density, temperature and speed) and the response value (tensile strength). Three levels of process parameters are taken in consideration. Experimentation is performed at each setting of process parameters. A prediction model for tensile strength obtained at different process parameter settings will be generated using Support Vector Regression. Prediction model is the visualized using graphical user interface (GUI). The figure shows the flow chart of methodology.

Benefits of the Project Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The product will be used by patients sufferung with hand drop disease which is caused by Carpel tunnel syndrome. It will be a fully customized wrist hand orthosis.

We will also have a Graphical User Interface for the prediction model which we developed using SVR.
