Agriculture is considered the backbone of Pakistan's    economy, which relies heavily on its major crops. According to ministry of finance It contributes about 18.5% percent of GDP and accounts for 37.4% of employed labor force and is the largest source of foreign exchange earnings. Pakistan is blessed to have 40% arable land. Issue concerning agriculture have been always make the development of country difficult. As we aware of the locust outbreak in Pakistan since 2019, According to the Punjab government statement “over an area of 715 acres in Punjab have been damaged” and most of the crops is damaged by the plant’s disease. The only solution to these problems is smart crop protection and monitoring. Smart crop protection and monitoring system (SCPM) is an efficient way to protect and monitor the crops using Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) based system. It aims to automate the agriculture. This device will monitor the crops and warn the farmer about soil moister level, locusts attack and if there are any diseases in crop. It will automate the water motor based on soil moister level. It would turn ON the buzzer if locust detected to make them run away. It will also send information of regarding crops to the authorized person.

Project Objectives

We aimed to develop a device that protect crops from locust’s attack and inform the farmer about the diseases in crops in times so that the crop will not damage more crop. It will be a GSM based device upon detection of locusts and crop disease it will inform the authorized person through SMS. Our project has three main part Auto irrigation, Locusts detection and crop disease detection. For Auto irrigation we are using soil moister measurement and will turn ON and OFF the motor accordingly. The second part is Locust detection using camera if locust detected then buzzer will turn ON and will make a huge sound to make the locusts run away. For crop disease detection we are using camera if disease is detected in crop then it will inform the farmer in time to take some action to protect crop.

following are the main objectives of our project:

  1. Motor is turned on/off based on soil moister level.
  2. Detect locusts attack and will turn ON the buzzer to make them run away.
  3. Will save the farmer from huge loss
  4. The device will detect early-stage crop disease.
  5. Warn the farmer about disease and will inform the farmer about the type of disease.
  6. Providing relief to farmer by reduced human effort.
  7. Reduce electricity cost by running the motor when needed and reduce the water usage.
Project Implementation Method

we are implementing this project by using deep learning algorithm. out project has three main parts auto irrigation, locusts detection and crop disease detection. we are detection locusts and crop disease by using deep learning architecture "SSD MobileNet V2". we are doing Transfer learning i-e we are training model with our custom datasets. our product will moniter the crops in real time in case of locusts attack our product will detect it and buzzer will turn ON and will make huge sound to make them run away from crops. Our system will also monitor the crops and incase of diseases detected in crop system will sent SMS alert to the farmer and inform him about the type of disease as well. For auto irrigation we are measuring soil moister level and will turn ON/OFF the motor accordingly. We will be setting a threshold value of soil moister level, the data comming from soil moister sensor will be campared with this threshold value and controller will take action accordingly.

Our system will also monitor the crops and incase of diseases detected in crop system will sent SMS alert to the farmer and inform him about the type of disease as well. For auto irrigation we are measuring soil moister level and will turn ON/OFF the motor accordingly. We will be setting a threshold value of soil moister level, the data comming from soil moister sensor will be campared with this threshold value and controller will take action accordingly.

Benefits of the Project

first of all, our product is a unique, rare and solitary.

A system which has three main features:

Crop protection from locust's attack Crop monitoring through detection of crop diseases and auto irrigation. Basically, it is a 3 in 1 system.

For protection of crop from locust's attack, there is no such device or system design, yet which detect the locust before it's attack and make them run away. So, we are providing its solution in our product which will make locust run away. For monitoring of crops, our product will also detect the diseases.

Also, there will be an auto irrigation system using soil moisture sensors in our product. All the information regarding crop will also be received on Cell phone of related farmer. For smart phone user there will also be an application and for simple phone user an SMS alert.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

we are using Raspberry pi 4 (1 GB) RAM as a controller in our project. we are traning a pre trained Model "SSD MobileNet V2" with our custom datasets of 3084 images (locusts and crop diseases). we are training this model by using tensor flow GPU and will used this model in Raspberry pi for image classification.  we are using PI camera module of 8 Megapixels which will moniter crops in real time. PI camera will be used as 10 to 12 fps the image captured by camera will be saved in Raspberry pi and algorithm will look for locusts or crop disease in case of locuts detected Buzzer will be turned ON untill locuts run away from crops.
