These rooms being large and often overcrowded, the security of their belongings was always under a threat. Over the decades, traditional lockers were used but everyone has been concerned about the safety of their valuables.
In today’s era, the concept of lockers has been changed. The technology is incorporated in traditional lockers to make them smart for ensuring the safety of their belongings for short-and long-term storage of valuables. This novel concept meets all the demands and challenges of modern age. That includes a completely new boxing system and a keyless code unlocking facility that makes it unique and efficient as compared to the usual lockers.
At different places like shopping malls, airports, hotels, and most visited places for tourism people carrying luggage, valuables, or items where it is difficult to carry luggage all the time. So, the problem is what they do with their valuables or how to safe their stuff. At that time people need to store valuable items securely. To visit these places without your luggage, book smart locker to store your valuables online. Another problem is, when we talk about manual storage system to submit their valuables on a counter and handed over it to staff, it is difficult to manage the valuables of people and to ensure that their valuables are secure and safe. Smart lockers will give you the freedom and flexibility to shop to your heart content and visit as many places as you desire.
This proposed project named as "BOXY SMART LOCKER BANK" will provide safe and secure locker to the people who wants to safe their valuables. The smart locker which can facilitate the temporary storage of goods by the people or visitors at any public place, these are keyless, robust, and secure lockers with electronic lock. Smart lockers automate all the time-consuming tasks that come with manual asset management, such as conducting transactions, logging sign-ins and sign-outs, and reporting. This frees up staff for more productive work without compromising the security. With transaction logging 100 percent automated, there is no risk of human error. This project will promote smart systems and technology to common men in our society and leads the society towards an advance era.
Project ObjectivesThe aims and objectives of proposed idea follows into two main categories,
- technical objectives, and
2- socio economic objectives:
Firstly, we would go through technical objectives which are as under:
1. Integrate embedded devices with the locker for automation.
2. Create a network of controllers, IoT Gateway and Internet in locker.
3. Design & develop cloud services.
4. Communicate with secure Cloud services.
5. Design & develop admin portal.
6. Design & develop Android/ iOS App.
Now, we enlighten the socio economic objectives:
- To introduce smart lockers in public places of our country.
- To safe the time and money of common people at public places by using this technology.
- To ensure the safety and security of valuables.
- To reduce the staff and management work.
- To encourage the people to do shopping and groceries at the same time when used in marts and malls. It will save their time.
- To make the airports and railway station more secure place for peoples’ luggage so that their travel stress will be lesser than before when lockers will used in these places.
- By making a user-friendly application, common people take advantage of it.
- This project will attract the business and can be the cause of prosperity in the country.
- Due to COVID-19 it has not been healthy to physically interact with people, this project will avoid the physical interaction between staff and customer.
- To promote smart systems and technology to common men in our society and leads the society towards an advance era.
When it comes to the project implementation method here firstly, we would talk about Embedded Systems integration with locker. In this stage we will first design the embedded device and then integrate with the locker for its automation with an online ordering system. To achieve this perfectly we will take mechanical dimensions of the locker so that the hardware that integrates with it works smoothly without any mechanical glitch. The locker will get open by an electro-mechanical actuator after QR verification by the app user.
Then Network & IoT Gateway, here we will create a network of embedded systems, IoT Gateway and Internet which will be configured to communicate with the cloud platform. QR code will help out here in front of the Boxy to scan a QR code by scanner. Lockers will get connected with the internet via gateway to communicate. Admin will control the application, a message from client then it will do some processing and will help out using API to send data on Server. Cloud services will be provided to lockers and API which will be used to transmit and receive data from customer applications via cloud. And in Cloud Platform & Services we design & develop the cloud platform services like Http web server, database, and all necessary components. Central database would be stored by user/admin in real-time. Operating system will contain end to end encryption and security socket layer technology protocols for secure communication within HTTP server to user and vice versa. Here Restful API is used for controlling and monitoring interfering messages accordingly using MQTT broker. The cloud platform would be developed in a way that we can scale it in future as per need.
Once the communication and cloud platform are working then we will develop the admin portal and android/ iOS applications. When the beta version of the application is ready, we will test it and deploy the admin portal on cloud and android App on google play store. The communication of Android App with cloud services will be via RESTful API. The security operations are the most important part of every Internet of Things’ enable solution. The general principle of security would embed in two Umbrellas- End to End encryption for applications and Link Layer encryption for hardware appliances. End to End link encryption will be used in the project sending the user's data encrypted and when received, it will get decrypted then it will be readable. Link layer Encryption method protects a lot of IP information as all traffic’s data is encrypted.
Benefits of the ProjectAs far as the benefits of the proposed project that is “Boxy Smart Locker Bank” are concern so, at different places like shopping malls, airports, hotels, and also most visited places for tourism people carrying luggage, valuables, or items which they are not allowed to take into the area, or it is difficult to carry luggage all the time. So, the problem is that what they do with their valuables or how to safe their stuff. At that time people need to store valuable items securely. This project will provide safe and secure locker to the people who wants to safe their valuables. The smart locker facilitates the peoples or visitors to store their belongings temporarily.

We can conclude that the proposed project will have technical benefits as well as the social benefits too, as it would introduce smart lockers in public places of our country Pakistan in this way it can play a part in leading our state one more step on the path of progress and prosperity and promote smart systems and technology to common men in our society and leads the society towards an advance era. It would ensure the safety and security of valuables and also reduce the staff and management work.
As we forging the additional/ future work ,so, the proposed idea when applied at restaurants it would save the time in take away portion. People can order from application and take it away from the boxy. And can promote the online shopping when place it as pick at locker technology. Also, can promote and introduce pick at locker service in Pakistan. This will attract the tourism in our country as the public places offers more facilities.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableHaving the preamble, locker contains a controller and scanner, connected with cloud to collaborate with by QR code. API’s will perform to send from the cloud to the mobile app. Admin will control the application, a message from client then it will do some processing and will help out using API to send data on Server.
Main Technical details of final deliverable are as follows in points:
1-Locker actuator with embedded systems development (Locker shelf & boxes are not included).
2- Network & IoT Gateway and configuration. will be configured to communicate with the cloud platform/ services in order to achieve everything synchronized from lockers to online ordering mobile applications.
3- Cloud services & platform deployment, installation, integration, and configuration.
4- Android/iOS Application and admin portal. The UX & UI design and wireframe of the app will be required from the client side in order to start app development and its features.
5- Security schemes including End-to-End and Link layer encryption. The general principle of security would embed in two Umbrellas- End to End encryption for applications and Link Layer encryption for hardware appliances.
