BLECHO
Project Area of Specialization Wearables and ImplantableProject SummaryBlindness is one of the biggest problems in the world, according to World Health Organization (WHO) 39 million people are blind in which 1.4 million are children below age 15 who suffer from blindness because of many disease. People who become irreversibly blind for the rest of their lives go through visual rehabilitation interventions for a full psychological and personal development.
World Health Organization (WHO) developed many polices, techniques and strategies to prevent blindness appropriate for various development settings. Alongside WHOa new organization is made known as World Access for the Blind under the leadership of Daniel Kish who is also a blind person but uses the technique of echolocation called flash sonar to enable him to see the world with sound created by him using his mouth. His organization is trying to teach other blind people to use the same advance flash sonar technique which they call perceptual navigation.
We proposed an innovative prototype device called BLECHO that uses an ultra sound sensor and bone conduction speaker that will work on the principle of echolocation just like bats do. The main purpose of the project is to create the perceptual navigation using the sound waves and echoes generated from the ultrasound sensor through which we want to activate the brains main visual cortex part and make the brain to adapt for the blind person to generate a vision of the environment with sound.
Project ObjectivesTo design a visor for blind aid which will help them restore the function of optic nerve with the help of bone conduction speaker and sonar sensor.
Project Implementation Method- First we will work on the calibration of sonar sensor.
- Then we will create GUI with generated images from Sonar sensor.
- Then will integrate both bone conduction speaker and sensor together in a device.
The name of the project i.e. BLECHO stands for blind and echo-localization, this means that the direct beneficiaries of our project is blind people that will help them restore their blindness if their optic nerve is not damaged.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableFinal delivery of the project will be in the form of Visor glasses that blind people can wear that will contain a bone conduction speaker. With that there will also the software setup that will display the sight of what the person can see.
