Project Title

Battery management system for CubeSat

Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject Summary

The purpose of this project is to make the working model of battery management system for 3U-CubeSat. This includes thermal control for maintaining temperatures, charging and discharging control, cell balancing to increase battery life and health telemetry of battery. Battery management system is very important for satellite because conditions change so drastically in space. Therefore, for proper working of satellite, we have to make battery management system in order to maintain the performance of battery under rapid changing atmospheric conditions.

Project Objectives

The main objectives of this project are:

  1. To develop battery management system according to the standards of 3U-CubeSat.
  2. To design a DC-DC converter for charging and discharging control units of battery.
  3. To implement an effective active cell balancing technique for cell balancing of battery.
  4. To manage and control the temperature (thermal control) of a battery.
  5. To monitor health telemetry of battery through sensors and to send the data of sensors to the microcontroller, on the basis of this data microcontroller will execute instructions for managing battery.
Project Implementation Method

After literature review, we will move toward components selection and schematic of design. After schematic design we will simulate each sub system on simulation software. Then we will design final software for battery management system and procure components. After finalizing software design and procuring components, we will move toward final hardware design, in which complete hardware will be designed.

Benefits of the Project Technical Details of Final Deliverable

In this project we design a buck boost converter which control charging and discharging of battery. Temperature sensors are used to measure temperature of battery.  The output of temperature sensor is also connected to ADC module of microcontroller. Switched Capacitor, active cell balancing technique is used for cell balancing in with quad switches and capacitors are used. AVR microcontroller AT32UC3C is used for interfacing different modules.
