Project Summary

Vehicle identification and identification of the owner of that vehicle have become a major problem in every country. In a country like Pakistan, where there are no proper measures taken for surveillance of the crimes being committed, and narrowing it down to the District Dir of Pakistan where the surveillance systems are firstly non-existent, and the ones that are present are obsolete and many a time, not properly functioning giving whoever has committed a crime, a green signal to escape with it. No proper measure is taken to overcome this problem. There are tons of algorithms designed to overcome this problem, to improve the accuracy of the facial recognition and number plate reading software, but none have been implemented in the area we are designing the software for. In District Dir, the crime rate has spiked at an unimaginable rate in the past few years. Vehicle theft has become quotidian and there is no proper order of surveillance that can help the police personnel to pursue these criminals and bring them to justice.

The system that is being developed by SNS Tech will replace the existing obsolete surveillance systems present at each police checkpoint in District Dir, with a faster, much smarter, and intellectually superior number plate & face recognition software integrated with the IP cameras on each police checkpoint. Our enhanced surveillance System will be connected to an online database that will not only have the record of each and every vehicle along with their number plate that is stolen but also the record of those individuals that may be the criminals or the prime suspects that may have or will gather the audacity to commit such a crime. If a scenario occurs where either the number plate of a car is recognized or a face of a wanted suspect matches with the data stored in the database, the system will automatically create an alert using the third party SMS API and an alarming blare that will be integrated within our system.

Project Objectives

Ensuring the safety of the lives and properties of the residents residing in an area is the topmost priority of our system under development. One cannot talk about utilizing technology to provide service for the betterment of a society without taking into consideration the safety of the people. This has always been the main goal, the protection of the citizens against any and every crime and criminal. Other than this, our main goal is to make use of cutting-edge technology to help the concerned authorities identify the suspects that may have been part of a crime or are the culprits in a criminal activity taking place. Not only the suspects but also the cars that have been reported to be stolen by identifying the number plate.

Long story short, our goal is to help the Police authorities of the Lower District region of KPK, by replacing the currently existing obsolete surveillance systems with an intellectually superior surveillance system developed with the latest technology and tools to minimize crime rate and criminal activities and to ensure the safety of those individuals, families and their properties that reside in Lower District region of Dir, KPK.

Project Implementation Method

This Project will be implemented using different tools. Computer Vision library will be used for Face or number plate recognition of criminals. Python will be used as a programming language for the development of this project. The hardware of high quality like Surveillance cameras or body cameras will be used in this project in order to compare faces of people on checkpost with that of Criminal database.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

We are done with the requirement engineering and Architecture phase of our project. Now we have started the implementation of our project. Our product is expected to be completed before July. but the only problem which may delay our project is hardware components. As a student, these hardware components are very costly for us.
