Project Summary

The proposed system is a fully automated grass cutting robotic vehicle powered by a Lithium-Ion Battery that is capable of fully automated grass cutting and a cost-effective solution. The system can be controlled and monitored by the use Android-based smart-phone application via an internet connection. The primary purpose of the proposed system is automation and surveillance. In automation, the user places the grass cutter in a corner of a lawn, and it starts moving as the user initializes the automatic mode from the application. The grasscutter cuts the grass of the entire lawn by the following boundary as a lawn area. The proposed system follows the irregular shape of the lawn as well. In surveillance mode, the user can monitor the entire grass cutting process through IP based camera and can control the machine through button controls present on android application.

In predefine area mode the user predefines the area of a specific lawn and the vehicle automatically starts moving in that direction cutting the entire grass.

Project Objectives

The objective of our project is

  • To design an Automatic Hybrid Grass Cutter which can operate automatically.
  • To develop an android application for controlling and monitoring the machine.
  • To monitor the grass cutting using an IP-based camera and the internet of things.

Project Implementation Method

The system will consist of an automated robotic vehicle containing blades that will act as a grass cutter. The proposed system is sort of internet of things and is controlled through a user-friendly android application interface to switch ON/OFF the grass cutter. The Android-based application will have three modes automation, surveillance, and area update. Therefore grass cutter will work according to the mode selected by the user. The user can select the Automatic Mode, which will automatically ON the robotic vehicle and will start cutting the grass until the endpoint is reached and turns OFF the vehicle automatically. By selecting surveillance mode the IP-based camera will get active and the user can monitor and control the robotic vehicle to cut the grass remotely. Moreover, the user can predefine the area using the third mode and the vehicle will cut the grass on that specific area. The whole system will function through different sensors used and microcontrollers.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The proposed system is a fully automated grass cutting robotic vehicle powered by a Lithium-Ion Battery that is capable of fully automated grass cutting. The system used a 12V battery to power the vehicle movement motors as well as the grass cutter motor. The grasscutter and vehicle motors are interfaced to an Arduino family microcontroller i.e. NodeMCU, that controls the working of all the electromechanical parts. Moreover, it is connected to the firebase cloud for processing real-time data via an internet connection. Blades are attached with the robotic vehicle for grass cutting purposes using a brushless DC motor. Its speed is controlled by using an electronic speed controller module. The automated grass cutter is capable of cutting the grass of a lawn automatically by detecting the boundary of a lawn using ultrasonic sensors that will give information to the micro-controller (NodeMCU), which in turn, turns ON/OFF the specific motors of the robotic vehicle. IP based camera is used in this system to control the bot movement manually by using smartphone base application and controllers on the application. So that the user can operate a grass cutter with live video coverage and can control it easily.
