Using the technology of Augmented Reality we can visualize the products which can be seen and interacted with in real time using our mobile phones. A normal customer before buying a piece of furniture has to go to the shop, pay for the furniture and then bring it back home and see how it looks like

Project Summary

Using the technology of Augmented Reality we can visualize the products which can be seen and interacted with in real time using our mobile phones. A normal customer before buying a piece of furniture has to go to the shop, pay for the furniture and then bring it back home and see how it looks like in the customer’s room. Visualizing how a chair, table, sofa will look in room, lawn or office before it is decorated and it will be easier to them this way rather than placing their furniture physically. This will help the user to try the furniture items in their room and they are able to see how it will look after the furniture. 

Project Objectives

The general objective of this project is to design and develop an augmented reality system for Interior design. We will design and develop a system for user and furniture interaction using augmented reality technology. To make easier for user to check furniture in virtual environment before buying. The main goal of this project is to bring facility and comfort to the customer and to make their lives easier. Since It is difficult and challenging for anyone to visualize how a chair, table or bed will look when we place it in a room before it is decorated and it take too much time and a lot of energy to set the furniture physically and shuffle it in room again and again and check it whether it look great or not.

This project will solve the problem of dealing with furniture, for instance if a person lives in an apartment where furniture is very hard to carry and it takes a lot of struggle and energy to put and check furniture manually plus it is possible that furniture can get damaged. The summery of this section is that If users want to check the furniture or wants to take decision whether to buy particular furniture or not, one way is that they have to buy it first then they have to pay the delivery charges for furniture to bring it home and after that they have to set each thing manually which is very costly. So, there should be convenient way for user to tackle these above-mentioned problems and effective solution is needed so that user can take their decision more easily without wasting time, energy and resources.

Project Implementation Method

 A 3D model is first rendered from the application and then with help of unity importing that model into the mobile application and then the user will be to see it in their phone and the customer can see how the product will look like without actually buying the product. This makes the customer confident in the product they are going to buy and they will not regret buying it. While in the other case if it looked unpleasant after the purchase of the product, the customer cannot do much about it, which makes their experience bad with product.
All the 3D models will be in the online database and the user will select the one of their choice, then that model will be downloaded into the application and then be used by the user. Using Augmented Reality we will be able to see the model using our mobile phone camera and can interact with it.

Benefits of the Project

The benefit is that it will make the whole process of buying furniture very convenient and less time consuming. This is a fast way of deciding for the customer in terms of what the customer would like to buy. It will even be encouraged by the furniture stores because they will advertise their product in different way than the usual method. It can also a lot of customers to use this since it is new concept and a new way to deal with this process.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

First step is to develop a 3D model that is to be used in the application. This 3D model can be made in many ways, one of them is Blender. On Blender we can manually design the furniture. This is however a more time consuming method. The other method can be is to use the technique of Photogrammetry. Photogrammetry is a process in which 3D models are made by taking that product’s photographs. Then these photographs are uploaded onto an Application called Meshroom. Meshroom will make 3D model of the pictures by combining all of them. Then the output is uploaded onto Blender where further editing can be done to make it more appealing and get the details right.
Now that we have the 3D model, we will need a place to use it. Using Unity we make a mobile application that is able to display 3D rendered models on the camera of the mobile phone. There are different ways to display this model, one approach is to use marker technique where we put a physical marker for detection on the floor and the camera will detect that marker and display that model on there. The other way and the more difficult way is to go for the markerless approach where we will be able to display the model without needing to use any physical markers and see the product easily. However markerless approach is difficult to implement but not impossible. 
For all these 3D models to placed, we will need an online database as well so that we can be able to access or upload more and more data at any time and from anywhere.
