Project Summary

Electric vehicle charging infrastructure is virtually non-existent in Pakistan. In order to move toward and capitalize the growing BEV market, we must deploy a large, efficient, modern, and affordable infrastructure throughout the country. Not only has the cost of BEVs dropped dramatically around the world in the past few years, but the costs of maintaining and running one are significantly less than that of a conventional fuel vehicle. Early adoption and capitalization of the BEV manufacturing and services market will prove highly beneficial for Pakistan. At the same time the positive impact of a green solution such as this on the environment, cannot be overstated.

Since our project is targeted toward the widest possible audience and is of general importance, we believe it has a high potential of wide-spread adoption. Our project is completely modular and highly adaptable to individual needs whether those of industrial service providers or home users. As it is made of locally sourced components and developed indigenously as well the costs associated will be also be reduced significantly. In the light of the new electrical vehicle policy approved by the Pakistani government at the end of 2019, huge incentives and tax benefits are being offered for the manufacture, import, and services related to the electric car. This will make adoption of technologies such as ours, easier and more lucrative at the same time.

Project Objectives

We will develop a rapid charger for battery-electric-vehicles (BEVs) conforming to the latest and most widely accepted world standard (CCS: Combined Charging System) and according to the guidelines of the largest association of BEV manufactures and service providers: CharIN. Our project will be made using locally sourced good quality components and developed completely indigenously.

Project Implementation Method

We will employ a completely modular and extensible approach toward the development of the project. This will ensure that the system is easily upgradable in the future with up and coming charging technologies and the latest innovations. Our team will be divided into further groups working on each of the modules according to the individual expertise and areas of passion. We will develop the following modules: cooling system, communication and control system, power control system, and charging system. All the modules will be independent and yet highly integrated, so any single module can be replaced or upgraded as the need arises. All the modules will in the end be integrated and extensive testing will be performed to ensure that they perform according to the requirements.

Benefits of the Project

Our solution will target and be geared toward both the industrial customer and the average domestic consumer. Considering the growing BEV market and tremendous progress in the adoption of the electric car such an infrastructure will benefit pretty much everyone. By conforming to the latest world standards and at the same time making it vastly more affordable than alternative imported solutions, we hope to capture a large market both with industrial service providers and home users. The electric car is one of those technologies that very well might prove to be the next largest disrupter with an effect similar in magnitude to the disruption caused by the introduction of the internal combustion engine.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The charger will dynamically charge an electric car at a power of 20kW+ while communicating with the onboard computer of the car.

Our project will consist of the following components:

  1. Modular Communication and Central Control System

    This will monitor the status of the car battery and communicate with the onboard car computer. At the same time this will communicate and control the other components of the charging station.

  2. Modular Power Control System

    This will take regulate the incoming power from the electrical grid optimally for both the charging and reduce the any sudden power surges from the grid. At the same time this will make sure the load is optimally balanced.

  3. Active Liquid Cooling System

    A liquid cooling system will increase the efficiency of the electronic components and reduce heating from the huge currents drawn at such a high power. By keeping the system cool this will also increase charging quality and service life of the charging station.

  4. Modular Charging System

    This is the part of the charger that will actually provide the rectified electrical power to the car’s battery. The voltage and current will be regulated to provide the fastest times without overheating the car’s battery.

  5. Modern Charging Profile

    All of this will be done according to an optimal charging profile. There is a huge room for improvement in this area and this continues to be a highly researched topic.
