Traffic lights are to control the flow of traffic on the roads, junctions, etc, worldwide. Nowadays traffic congestion is a major problem all over the world. The number of vehicles gets increased as compared to roads. Traffic control signals are working to control the movement of vehicles on the roads but they are unable to manage the efficient traffic flows.
Furthermore, usually, our traffic signal systems use a timing mechanism that changes the signals after a particular time interval. This causes many complications in daily routine life, like:
- Green lights for less traffic or empty road
- Wastage of fuel and money.
- Violation of traffic rules.
- Heavy traffic congestion.
- Wastage of time on a daily bases.
- Population increment in a specific area.
- Delay in working of emergency vehicles.
Proposed System
We are proposing a system which can overcome these problems. Our proposed system will help traffic signals to operate in real-time conditions. Traffic signals will operate based on traffic on the road automatically. The system uses a camera to check the density of the vehicles on the road and then open the road having maximum traffic. As well as it will check whether is any emergency vehicle, the system will give the priority to the road having an emergency vehicle and open the regarding lane.
Project Conclusion
The AI-based Traffic control system is designed to establish an intelligent traffic signal control system. This system will provide the ease to route the traffic on the bases of the real-time density of vehicles.
The necessity of automatic signals control system is an urgent need to automate the flow of traffic. Our proposed system will help traffic signals to operate in real-time conditions. Traffic operates based on traffic on the road automatically. Furthermore to fulfill such goals:-
§ Ensure an easy flow of traffic by reducing gridlock.
§ Allow permission to the road having high density.
§ Eliminate the need for manpower.
§ Reduce the wastage of time, fuel, and other resources.
§ To get rid of depression and irritation.
§ Give priority to the emergency vehicle (Ambulance, Fire brigade, etc).
Functional & Operational BehaviorThe system uses a camera to check the density of the vehicles on the road and then open the road having maximum traffic. As well as it will check whether any emergency vehicle is, the system will give the priority to the road having an emergency vehicle and open the signal.
Project Implementation Method Methodology for Implementation of Project- A camera is placed in each direction to monitor the traffic density, as well as emergency vehicles on the road. Firstly the camera detects the presence of emergency vehicles it will turn the signal green in that direction and the rest will be red. When the camera will not detect the emergency vehicle then the number of vehicles on the road is high then the traffic signals will be automatically changed. The red signal will get changed to a green signal when the traffic density on the road is high.
- The camera will not detect the emergency vehicle then the traffic density in one direction is high, the green signal will change in that direction, and the rest will be in red.
- Acquired data is processed using raspberry pi. Raspberry pi will make decisions based on that processed data. Usually, Raspberry pi is used for interfacing the camera and all sensors. Python language is used for programming raspberry pi.
- When any vehicle violates the traffic laws camera will capture the image of that vehicle and create a message. The image and the message consisting of the information about the violation will be sent to the concerned authority.
- While recording, cameras will count the number of vehicles passing through the roads. After a specific time interval, Raspberry Pi will analyze and make statistics.
- Web Portal Dashboard will give all the information visually and easily. We can smoothly go through statistics.
Our proposed system is an intelligent traffic light system is system that joins traditional traffic lights with some cameras and Artificial intelligence to intelligently route traffic on the bases of its density. The proposed system tends us to following benefits:
- The system works intelligently without the need for any instruction.
- The system works on the bases of the vehicle’s density.
- Lessen heavy traffic jams.
- Less pollution.
- Save human time which wastes in traffic.
- Savage of fuel, money, and Resources.
- Easy clearance of road at the entrance of emergency vehicles.

- The camera will not detect the emergency vehicle then the traffic density in one direction is high, the green signal will change in that direction, and the rest will be in red.
