Wireless Foot Plantar Pressure Measurement System
Project Area of Specialization Wearables and ImplantableProject Summary Project SummaryThe human motion can be modelled in terms of foot plantar pressure exerted by the humans during walking or running. This research proposes an automated system for the acquisition and analysis of foot plantar pressure data in humans during walking. The pressure distribution patterns between normal people and people with movement impairments are significantly different. This property of foot plantar pressure can be used to diagnose any movement impairment in its early stages. In this research In-shoe foot, the plantar pressure sensor will be used to record the foot plantar pressure data from healthy humans and patients. The recorded data will be processed to extract feature points based on the pressure data distribution captured during the walking trial. By using recorded information from various human subjects, the database will be developed for the training and testing of ML algorithms. The proposed system has the potential for various applications including ergonomic footwear design, sports performance analysis, injury prevention, physical therapy, rehabilitation training systems and disease diagnosis.
Project Objectives Project Objectives- To develop a data acquisition system for recording human foot plantar pressure data.
- To develop a database by modelling human gait in terms of foot plantar pressure data.
- To train and test the machine learning classifiers on the developed database.
The proposed system will utilize a single In-Shoe pressure sensor to record the data. First, the pressure sensor will be interfaced with Arduino in order to capture and record the pressure data. Then, the data will be processed for the purpose of extracting relevant information about the characteristics of human gait. The data processing will be done using a Python programming language. Feature points for the database will be based on average dynamic pressure during gait cycles and the distribution of pressure along the foot in two dimensions (i.e. x and y). The foot can be divided into certain portions wherein each portion's pressure distribution is uniform. It is shown in the figure below.

The average pressure at any time in each portion represents the human gait. This pressure distribution will be utilized to differentiate between abnormal and normal gait.

The proposed research project will provide an effective way of diagnosing health-related issues by analyzing human motion which is quite challenging and difficult for medical professionals if performed manually. This research offers solutions to various problems in multiple areas of science. The overall project is cost-effective, especially in long run, as the diagnosis can be performed automatically without the need for expensive laboratory tests.
Technical Details of Final Deliverable Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe proposed system will consist of hardware (I.e. Arduino and In-Shoe pressure sensor) and software (python) for the data acquisition and processing purposes. The proposed system models the human gait by calculating the dynamic foot plantar pressure. The system will be easy to use and high accuracy in modeling can be achieved as the pressure sensors have fine accuracy. The trained ML classifiers make the final prediction about the condition of individuals. The overall accuracy of the final model will depend upon the number of examples shown to the classifiers and also on the parameters chosen for the training.
