Project Summary

The project presents the design of a 3-axis robotic arm that replicates casual human arm motion via wireless wearable sensors. User motions are sensed by a 3-axis accelerometer and LDR Sensors, processed by a central microcontroller, and replicated by servomotors on the robotic arm. In addition to robotic arm, the same sensors can also be simultaneously used for movement of toy car engine on which the robotic arm is fixed, that is, the car be moved in any direction as instructed by the gesture of same human arm which is previous used for the movement of robotic arm. Thus the same human arm can be used for controlling of both the robotic arm and the toy car engine simultaneously.

Project Objectives

This project is directed towards the development in the field of robotics.

  • Robotics has become very useful in medicine, education, military, research and mostly, in the world of manufacturing.
  • This robotic arm having artificial intelligence can perform many industrial duties.
  • Typical industrial robots do jobs that are difficult, dangerous or dull. They lift heavy objects, paint, handle chemicals, and perform assembly work. They perform the same job hour after hour, day after day with precision. They don't get tired and they don't make errors associated with fatigue and so are ideally suited to performing repetitive tasks.
  • This Robotic arm is designed to help humans.
  • Used for pick and place work. For example, among the elderly or people with disabilities, who need help for everyday things can use this robotic arm for lifting small household objects in their homes.
  • It can accomplish complex tasks in diverse environments and replace scientists in difficult possibly dangerous extravehicular activities and can be supervised by our own hand gesture without usage of any type remote control to make it more user friendly.

For business and industry, these small robotic arms are another technology that helps companies to compete in the global marketplace and help to establish themselves.

Project Implementation Method

Initially the project will be divided in three sections, and is classified as follows:

  1. The mechanical structure section.
  2. Electronics section.
  3. Software (Coding) section.

The work done will be elaborated in the above-mentioned three main streams as mechanical structure, hardware and software, separately because all these things are different fields of work.

The mechanical structure section deals with the analysis of the forces and materials that cause a body to be in physical motion, the parts of the robotic arm that are acted upon directly by the motors and the gears to achieve motion, and design of tensile strengths to withstand the stresses generated due to friction and force of propulsion.

The electronic section deals with the materials that we have selected for the control system of the robotic arm. The arm is controlled by a microcontroller driving the actuators (dc and servo motors) via latches and transistors.

A robotic arm, by definition, must have intelligence and this actually means some software that directs it on what to do, given zero, one or more input conditions. So the software section deals with the choice of programming language, so the language chosen by us for the programming is assembly language because of low level language and easy to use.

Benefits of the Project

The scope of the project includes the designing and building of the hardware and software for a comparable robotic arm. The completed project will consist of a robot arm with three degrees of freedom, controlled electronics, and software to teach and control the arm. Successful completion of the project will be achieved when the project’s robotic arm can perform the same task as required and will be very useful in medicine, education, military, research and mostly, in the world of manufacturing. This robotic arm having artificial intelligence can perform many industrial duties.
