VR Walkthrough Simulator for Customizable Buildings

Project Area of Specialization Augmented and Virtual RealityProject Summary

Every day we come to know about some buildings which are taking months and years to complete, and even after that, the customers are not fully satisfied. Such buildings take time not because they were huge and it was hard to build it. The actual reason behind so much time is that there was not a complete picture of what the customer wants, which results in re-building things again and again. Some people want customized houses and offices for themselves because it’s like a dream house or office for them, they spend extra money to design such architectural map, but even after spending so much that they don’t exactly know how it would actually look like which would result in re-building things. Interior designing is the most difficult task here, what should be the color of the walls, which type of cabinets will look nice in the kitchen, where would be the almirah, television, sofas, chairs, the bed should be placed is one of a tiring task. These things take more efforts, costs, time, etc. The architects, designers, workers also suffer in this, they have to do things many times.

The life of the workers was also at stake all the time because they don’t have such safety measures and with that, they are doing the same job many times. Construction workers are at a higher risk of potential falls and severe injuries. The daily wage laborer or mazdoor, hired by a construction company, or a private contractor, are seen atop high rise buildings and houses cementing roofs, carrying bricks or pushing wheelbarrows. Eye injuries caused by dust and gravel are common, as there is no concept of wearing eye shields. Wall painters can be seen painting roofs and walls of tall buildings. Often, a simple plank of wood is the only support used while painting several feet above the ground.

The need for our idea begins here, we want to bring architects and designers on the same page. We want customers to be completely satisfied throughout the construction period and also after the completion of their project. Through virtual reality, customers will be able to see their project beforehand and ask for the changes. If they want to move kitchen from right to left they can do that if they want to make their home single unit they can, and many other things like that. The main thing, the interior designing of the house, customers can decide what color of the walls they want, they can check different colors and can decide, they can decide where they want to put sofas, almirah, bed and other stuff in real-time so that the electrical connections and other things will happen accordingly. This all can save a lot of money, efforts, and time of all the people though they are customers, architects or designers.

Through our project, the customers will be able to move around in the building which is not even built yet. They can decide each and everything before the starting of the construction. The work of architects and designers will become also easy, they can also see what they are heading to.

Project Objectives

In contemporary world, a number of stakeholders work separately on the same project— hectic and tedious 2D drawings (Architecture, structure, electric, and plumbing)— which require specialized training and knowledge to comprehend numerous problems in complementing each other for the construction manager; therefore, cause delay in time, overburden of cost, and unsatisfaction in quality. Moreover, user satisfaction and expectation often have to survive, through AR/VR, this all can appear as a binding force, where one can visualize the building with each and every component collectively. If problems appear, they can be easily eradicated, and before the implementation of the project, everyone would be on the same page. Most importantly, user satisfaction varies from person to person; some like light colors while other like bright, therefore AR/VR can provide a platform to get satisfactory, desired results as well as easiness to understand and explain thoughts and perceptions.

Our main objectives are:

Project Implementation Method

We would be using different software to develop our project. It would be a collaboration of different technologies and fields. We would use Revit, Sketchup and software like these which is used to design a model of a building, in which we can also choose what type of material we want to use, how much square feet of the building would be, by setting all these we would make a model of our building, then we would deploy in unity. “Unity” is a software which is mainly used to make augmented reality games. Here we are using it to create an environment where designers, architects, and customers would be on the same page from the starting of the project till the end. We would use Oculus to bring imagination into reality where a person can move around in his/her house way before the starting of construction and can do error correction, and make whatever changes he/she wants to. Also we will also use Artificial Intelligence to make the person feel the virtual environment.

Software:

-Unity

-Revit

-Sketchup

Equipment/Tools:

-Oculus

Benefits of the Project Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Virtual Reality (VR) is an artificial, computer-generated simulation or recreation of a real-life environment or situation. It immerses the user by making them feel like they are experiencing the simulated reality firsthand, primarily by stimulating their vision and hearing.

We will create a virtual environment in Unity that can export a building model and implement teleportation, so the person will be able to move around in the building. For further enhancement and features like to make changes in real-time, we will be using C# language to implement such features in the environment. Also, we will use the sensor of the controllers of the Oculus or use an Artificial Intelligence device which makes the user feel the environment.
