Project Area of Specialization Computer ScienceProject SummaryThe project is about creating the virtual reality chemistry lab that will be helpful for the students and teachers. The lab will cover the concepts of chemistry by the practical work recommended by Punjab Textbook Board for Matriculation and Intermediate examinations will be performable using this lab.
Project ObjectivesMost of the schools and colleges never teaches by performing the experiments of chemistry due to absence of chemistry lab or some costly lab materials are not available to perform experiments. This makes the subject chemistry very difficult for the students. Fortunately, if the lab is available in any educational institute with fully equipped chemicals and all other necessary materials required to perform any experiment then only teacher performs the experiment in front of students and no student is allowed to touch the lab due to the fear that costly material may get damaged. All above problems can be solved using the virtual chemistry lab.
Project Implementation MethodFollowing tools will be used to complete this project.
- Programming Language:
- Python is the widely used programming language with strong community that will be used to develop the web-based modules.
- Framework:
- Django is the python-based framework that will be used for development of web application.
- Development Tool:
- Blender is the tool written in Python and C++, that supports the creation of three-dimensional models. All the models required for this project will be created in Blender. This tool is free of cost to use.
- Unity 3D is the software that allows us to create Virtual Reality based applications.
- External Tools:
- VR Headset is used by the user to access the virtual environment and the Kinect will be used to perform motion-based operation in virtual environment.
The project will be very helpful for students as they will perform all the experiments conveniently to get better understanding about the reaction the read in class.
Some chemicals are so costly that the institute can’t buy them in large amount to perform practical, but this issue will be easily resolved using virtual lab.
By using this lab, the safety of human body will be guaranteed, no matter how dangerous the chemical reaction is. When dealing with chemicals in reality the risk is always there that the person may get harm from the high reactive chemicals or from the explosive reactions. By using VR based lab this risk will be completely reduced, and the person will carry the experiments without any fear.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableVR Application:
The Virtual Reality (VR) will be used to create the virtual environment containing the lab equipped with all the materials required in lab. The user will learn the concepts of chemistry by performing experiment using the VR headset and Kinect.
Student Module:
A Student Portal will be developed to manage the students of our Virtual Chemistry Lab. The student will be registered, and all the lab manuals will be accessed using this portal. The student can also check the score the teacher marked for the task performed. The portal will help the students to get evaluated by the teachers by sending the results of the task performed.
Teacher Module:
The Teacher portal will allow the teachers to provide manuals to the students. Teacher will have the functionality to evaluate student scoring based on results the student obtained through task.
